Store, man report being robbed
One victim said he handed over $4 when confronted by a man with a gun.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating a pair of aggravated robberies on the city's South Side, one victim being an out-of-town visitor and the other a Market Street store.
Police said a 58-year-old man from Mount Sterling, Ohio, was getting out of his car in his sister's driveway in the 500 block of Palmer Avenue around 7:40 p.m. Friday when a car pulled up to the end of the driveway and a man got out, demanding money.
The victim said the man pulled what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun from his waistband to reinforce his demand.
The victim said he pulled four $1 bills from his front pocket and handed them to the man, who got back into the car. The gunman was last seen headed west on Palmer, police said.
The robber was described as a black man about 20 years old, about 5 feet 9 inches and weighing about 200 pounds. He was wearing a black, hooded jacket.
The car was gold-colored and possibly a Cavalier, the victim said.
At Rite Aid
A plainclothes security employee at Rite Aid, 2701 Market St., told police that he confronted a man suspected of taking something from the store around 9:15 p.m. Friday.
The security officer said he heard the sound of a crash coming from the east side of the store and saw a man walking away from that area.
The man had a large bulge under his coat, and the security officer said he tried to stop the man, who refused to cooperate.
The confrontation moved into the parking lot where the security officer said the man claimed to have a knife and threatened to use it if the officer didn't let him go.
The security officer said he quit fighting with the man, who went north on Market where he was joined by a black woman wearing a redhooded jacket coat. The two continued moving north, he said.
Police said store representatives didn't immediately know what was missing and a security video would have to be reviewed.
The robber was described as a black man about 35 years old, about 6 feet 2 inches and around 190 pounds. He wore a green flannel shirt and a black leather coat.
