SALEM -- South Range's rushing attack behind solid blocking proved to be too much for the Crestview High football team to handle Friday night.
The Raiders outlasted the Rebels for the second time this season, this time in a high-scoring shootout, 49-32, in a Division V regional semifinal at Reilly Stadium.
Senior fullback Kris Davis and senior halfback Matt Schlatter combined for seven touchdowns and 331 rushing yards as they powered their way through big holes in the line to spearhead South Range's potent rushing game that churned out 323 yards in 46 runs.
Davis scored four touchdowns on runs of 49, 47 and 2 yards and 1 yard, and rushed for 147 yards in 18 carries.
Schlatter scored three TDs and rushed for 184 yards in 14 attempts as the Raiders scored 21 points each in the second and fourth quarters to surge.
Pat Majernik was a perfect 7-for-7 in extra-point kicks.
The Rebels trailed by only 35-32 early in the fourth quarter before Schlatter and Davis broke TD runs of 29 and 47 yards, respectively, to clinch the outcome.
Northwestern is next
South Range (12-0) advanced into a regional final next Friday at 7:30 p.m. against West Salem Northwestern (10-2), which ousted Warren JFK, 28-13.
"The holes were massive on the left side of the line," South Range coach Dan Yeagley said. "In the first half, we weren't finding the holes but in the second half we luckily began picking up the blocks."
Yeagley lauded the blocking of senior guard Chris Allshouse and senior tackle Mike Geffert.
"Allshouse and Geffert were on the left side of the line opening holes. And Schlatter was out front blocking for Davis and vice versa," Yeagley said.
The Raiders were able to overcome the standout play from senior quarterback Jordan Reynolds of Crestview, who completed 12 of 25 passes for 168 and added 78 yards rushing in 15 carries
Crestview standouts
Reynolds, a clever runner, sharp passer and overall leader, ran for an 8-yard TD, fired an 8-yard TD pass to senior running back Adam Thompson and also kicked a 20-yard field goal to help keep the Rebels in contention.
Thompson also sparkled by rushing for 150 yards in 19 carries, including a 58-yard scoring dash.
Junior halfback Zech Parker caught seven passes from Reynolds for 78 yards while Justin Coie added three receptions for 53 yards and Thompson two catches for five yards. Parker also had 34 rushing yards in seven runs.
The Rebels rushed for 262 yards in 41 attempts and had 20 first downs.
Crestview coach Paul Cusick, whose Rebels (10-2) lost to the Raiders in the second game of the season (17-14), said South Range "just kept making plays, play after play. They did a great job."
He blamed the big holes in the offensive line that Davis was getting through on the Crestview's defense, which he said was committing inside instead of converging on the runners breaking through the line.
"We were over-penetrating. We were overrunning the ball. And he [Davis] popped it," said Cusick, who also said good field position helped South Range.
"Anytime you give them a short field, they are going to take advantage of it."
After Crestview pulled to within 35-32 on Reynolds' 8-yard TD strike to Thompson to cap a 72-yard, nine-play drive with 7:26 left, Schlatter scored on a 29-yard run to finish an 81-yard, nine-play march at 3:48 to put South Range ahead.
Then Davis intercepted Reynolds' pass at the South Range 44, and the Raiders moved the 56 yards in four plays to Davis 47-yard TD dash to seal the victory.
