Dress of soap labels latest museum piece
CINCINNATI (AP) -- A 1940s-style house dress made of 100 Ivory soap labels is the newest piece to go on display at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
The labels were donated by the soap's Cincinnati-based maker, Procter & amp; Gamble, from a 2000 promotion that featured blue-and-white replicas of the label's original black-and-white design.
The museum commissioned the piece last fall from Chicago artist Cat Chow, 32. The dress will be on display in an exhibit of Chow's work that runs through March 5.
Chow said she thought the soap represented the "clean and domestic" role of women in the mid-20th century. She stitched the labels together into squares and then joined them to make the dress.
Chow has also made art out of dollar bills, credit cards and tissues. The museum's display is her first solo exhibit.
