WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Eric Williams had 19 points and Trent Strickland had 18 points and 11 rebounds, helping No. 18 Wake Forest hold off George Mason 83-78 in overtime in the second round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic. Justin Gray added 17 points for the Demon Deacons (2-0), who blew a 19-point lead in the second half before finally earning their 18th straight home win. Wake Forest advanced to face Florida in next week's semifinals in New York. Tony Skinn had 23 points to lead the Patriots (1-1), who nearly earned their first victory against a ranked opponent. Wake Forest appeared in control before George Mason turned to fullcourt pressure to methodically cut away at the lead, fueling a 16-6 run over the last 6 minutes to erase a 65-55 deficit and force overtime.
WOMEN
NORMAN, Okla.-- Freshman Courtney Paris scored 24 points and had 10 rebounds to lead No. 25 Oklahoma to an 89-57 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first round of the Preseason Women's NIT. The 6-foot-4 center, the high school player of the year by USA Today and the Naismith Foundation last season, shot 12-of-15 from the field before sitting out the final six minutes in the best scoring debut by a freshman in school history. Laura Andrews scored all of her 11 points in the first half, Chelsi Welch also added 11 and Leah Rush had 10 for Oklahoma (1-0), which has won its last eight home openers. With the win, the Sooners advanced to face SMU in the second round of the Preseason WNIT on Sunday. Turquoise McCain scored 14 points and Nichole Drummond added 12 for Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the first Horizon League team to play in the Preseason WNIT in the tournament's 10 years in existence. In Eugene, Ore., Khadija Bowens had 14 points and five rebounds to help No. 21 Temple open the season with a 65-48 victory over Michigan in the Women's Sports Foundation Tournament. Candice Dupree added scored 10 points and nine rebounds for Temple, which will play the St. Francis of Pennsylvania-Oregon winner in the championship game Saturday night. Freshman point guarded Jessica Minnfield scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers in her Michigan debut.
