Salem levy heads toward loss; Leetonia, Liverpool issues pass



SALEM -- The city schools' 4.3-mill levy appeared to be headed to defeat, based on partial returns from voting in Tuesday's general election.
School officials had outlined a series of cuts they would have to make if the went down to defeat. Failure has been projected to leave the district with a $1.9 million deficit by the end of the 2006-07 school year.
In the five-way race for two seats on the city school board, Joe Rottenborn was in the lead with 25 percent of the ballots counted. He was followed by Cathy Hergenrother with 24 percent of the vote. The other candidates are Kathy Gano, the only incumbent in the race, Carl Bryan and Cindi Slavens.
In the Leetonia school district, a 5.8-mill renewal levy appeared to be passing.
East Liverpool voters appeared to be passing a 6.5-mill levy.
