YOUNGSTOWN -- The defending champions in Division IV made it known that they want to repeat.
Cardinal Mooney high rolled up 503 yards on offense, scored six touchdowns and kicked three field goals, as the No. 1 seeded Cardinals rolled the eight seed Royals of Cuyahoga Falls Christian Academy 51-7 at Stambaugh Stadium.
Mooney will play Akron Manchester next Saturday night in the Region 13 semifinals. Manchester blasted Garrettsville Garfield 41-7 in their first round contest.
Mooney quarterback Derrell Johnson scored on runs of 53 and 79 yards, and also connected on a 43-yard scoring strike to Pat Kohowski in his second game back in action after missing five games due to a broken leg.
Johnson had 153 yards rushing on seven carries, and was 5-of-9 passing for 97 yards. Kohowski had four catches for 88 yards in the game.
Back up tailback Dan McCarthy also scored twice, on runs of 71 and two yards. He finished the game with 143 yards on just six carries.
Mooney scored on its first two possessions in the game. After a CVCA punt the Cards went 82 yards in 6 plays with Johnson scoring on the 53-yard scamper around the right end. Will Kandray kicked the first of his six extra points for the 7-0 lead with 7:14 to play in the first quarter.
On the third play after the kickoff the Royals fumbled the ball with Nate Burney of Mooney recovering the ball on the Royals' 26 yard line.
Mooney was stooped at the five yard line and Kandray kicked a 22-yard field goal to increase the Cards lead to 10-0 after the first 12 minutes.
Two late scores
With just over two minutes to play in the first half the Cards struck twice more. First Johnson scored his second touchdown on a 79-yard run around the left side.
Then with a fourth and one from their own 30, the Royals went for the first down and were stuffed by the Mooney defense.
The Cards drive bogged down and Kandray connected on a 38 yard field goal for a 20-0 lead at the half.
It only took three plays for the Cards to score in the third quarter as Johnson hit Kohowski for a 27-0 lead, which became 34-0 when Desmond Marrow returned an interception 54 yards for a score just five plays later.
CVCA finally got on the board as they drove 70 yards in four plays with John Weakley scoring on a 43-yard run.
At this point McCarthy took over as he raced 71 yards for his first score late in the third quarter and after he carried the ball 55 yards down to the CVCA two he scored the final touchdown of the game with just over 10 minutes left.
Burney added 68 yards on 10 carries for the Cards, who had 406 yards on 35 rushing attempts and 13 first downs.
Weakley led the Royals with 76 yards on 8 tries on the ground. CVCA had 170 yards rushing on 42 attempts but managed just 15 yards through the air. The Royals had eight first downs. Mooney suffered eight penalties for 77 yards, CVCA had just one penalty for five yards in the contest.
