Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. SHORT-TERM OPPORTUNITIES:
Butler Institute of American Art: Vendors need help to unload and set up for the "Christmas At The Butler" show, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1-2.
Foster Grandparents Program: A person or group is needed to wrap Christmas gifts at Barnes & amp; Noble Booksellers on Dec. 2, 9,16, or 24.
Lutheran Social Services: A volunteer is needed from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 15 to assist with a training session by compiling training folders and setting up information.
Beatitude House/Potter's Wheel: Volunteers are needed this month to do informal instruction with clients in preparation for the General Educational Development test.
Ronald McDonald House: Volunteers are needed to help decorate for Christmas between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Dec. 3.
Salvation Army: People needed Nov. 21-22 to help prepare the Thanksgiving meal and also Nov. 23, when the meal is served.
Trumbull Mobile Meals: A person is needed to sell raffle tickets at various businesses in southern Trumbull County during the months of November and December.
LONG-TERM OPPORTUNITIES:
Citizen Corps: People are needed who are interested in becoming trained volunteers who would respond to emergencies and disasters in their community.
Addiction Program of the Mahoning County: Residential aides are needed to monitor residents and report to counselors, help serve meals and complete some paperwork.
Alzheimer's Association: Help line volunteers are needed to answer phone inquiries and provide reassurance to callers. Training is provided.
Children's Museum of the Valley: The facility is looking for crew members with skills in carpentry, electrical work, construction, painting, etc.
The Greater Youngstown Point: The homeless shelter wants volunteers to assist clients with activities, to prepare meals and work in the food pantry.
Junior Achievement: Volunteers will deliver the program to students five to 10 times yearly during 45-minute sessions with teacher supervision. Training and materials provided.
Park Vista Retirement Community: A person is needed to clean the bird cage once a month.
Needle's Eye: Tutors are needed to work with students from grades one through four on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30.
Trumbull Mobile Meals: Volunteers are needed to pack meals or deliver them in southern Trumbull County. This can be done once a month or once a week.
Western Reserve Historical Society/Loghurst: The museum is located in Canfield, and volunteers can present tours, aid with material preparation, or assist in the museum store.
Volunteer Services Agency: VSA is looking for people who like to sew, knit, crochet, etc., and make items in their homes to be donated to nursing homes and hospitals. Also, donations of yarn and materials are welcomed.
Volunteer Services to Seniors: People are needed to assist seniors with grocery shopping, trips to doctor's office, and make friendly visits or reassurance calls.
