American Legion meeting
American Legion Post 247 of Lowellville will host the Mahoning County District 9 meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at its meeting room in Lowellville City Hall.
RETIREES
Master Sergeant retires
Air Force Master Sgt. Kenneth Olinik, formerly of Austintown, has retired after a 21-year military career.
His sister, Army Lt. Col. Catherine Shutak, was presiding officer at her brother's retirement ceremony conducted at the National Security Agency, Fort Meade, Md.
Shutak, who received the Bronze Star for her performance as head nurse and second in command at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq during 2004 and 2005, also presented Olinik with his second Meritorious Service Medal.
Olinik and Shutak, both graduates of Austintown Fitch High School, are the son and daughter of Michael and Shirley Olinik Jr. of Greenbush, Va., formerly of Austintown, and grandchildren of Michael Olinik Sr. of Youngstown.
Awards and decorations Olinik received during his career include: Joint Service Commendation and Achievement Medals; Air Force Commendation and Achievement Medals; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; and the NATO Kosovo Medal. He was the 2004 Air Intelligence Agency's Communications and Information Award winner in the senior noncommissioned officer category.
He served in several areas around the world, including Honduras, South Korea, Turkey, Germany, Egypt, Cuba, Japan and Italy, as well as duty stations in the United States.
He also served on the Air Force Protective Communications Team during the 2000 presidential campaign and 2001 inauguration, working directly with the Secret Service.
PROMOTIONS
Officer becomes major
Army Major George L. Hammar IV, a field artillery officer, was promoted to his current rank while assigned as an observer/controller at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center at Hohenfels, Germany. Hammar, a 1989 graduate of Chaney High School and a 1995 graduate of Youngstown State University, is the son of George and Lydia Hammar of Youngstown. Major Hammar and his wife, the former Joy Hawley of Dodge City, Kan., have a daughter, Rylee.
Changing assignments
Navy Chief Petty Officer Scott A. Maltonic was promoted to his current rank while deployed to Divbouti, Africa. He returned last September to his regular assignment at Balboa Hospital, San Diego, Calif., Naval Base, and resumed his duties as a supply officer. Maltonic, a son of Nancy and George Maltonic, and a 1993 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, is scheduled for an 18-month deployment to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, beginning in January 2006.

Sgt. returns from Iraq
Army Sgt. Robert Kirkpatrick, 1st Battalion, 503 Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division, has returned to the United States after two years overseas. He is stationed at Fort Collins, Colo., after spending one year at Camp Casey, South Korea, and most recently a year in Ramadi, Al Anbar Province, Iraq, at a front-line duty station in the downtown area. After returning from Iraq, Kirkpatrick attended a four-week Primary Leadership Development Course at Fort Hood, Texas. He is expected to spend the next eight months at Fort Collins, when he will complete his four-year enlistment and enroll at Youngstown State University.
Kirkpatrick, the son of Bob and Joyce Kirkpatrick of Girard, is a 2002 graduate of Girard High School.
Supporting Iraq missions
Air Force Tech. Sgt. William J. Dellick Jr. is deployed to an overseas forward-operating location to support the missions of operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
Dellick, 1980 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, is normally assigned to the 31st Fighter Wing, Aviano Air Base, Italy. He is the son of William and Elizabeth Dellick of Campbell. His wife, Nancy, is the daughter of Joseph and Mary Mazzocca of Campbell.
Engineer sent to Baghdad
Army Capt. Ruth A. Jarabek, stationed at Heidelberg, Germany, is serving a one-year tour of duty at Camp Victory, Baghdad, Iraq. She is an engineer in the Staff Engineering Section of the Multi-National Corps, which works on reconstruction projects in Iraq.
Jarabek, a daughter of Joseph and Myrlynn Jarabek of Youngstown, is a 1996 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and a 2002 graduate of the Military Academy at West Point.

910TH AIRLIFT WING
Senior airman assigned
Air Force Reserve Senior Airman Anthony W. Behanna has been assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Vienna. Behanna, a morale, welfare, recreation and services helper, is a 1988 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
