NEW WILMINGTON - The scoreboard had the final at Reynolds 33, Seneca 13, but that was only part of the story.
When Reynolds met Seneca Saturday night in the quarterfinal round of the District 10 Class AA football playoffs, the two teams were anything but strangers to each other.
Not only did the two teams face each other during the regular season, it was only eight days ago that the game took place with Reynolds coming back to down the Bobcats 28-14 in the regular season finale.
Unsure
"I really don't know if it was an advantage to either team just having played each other last week," said Reynolds coach Tim Scarvel. "I would like to think that we had a little bit of an advantage because we went up to their place and won the game, but at the same time, they know what we are bringing to the table right now so I don't know if it put us in a better position coming into tonight's game or not."
As for preparation, Scarvel felt that both teams would have a few new wrinkles to show each other.
"There were some things that we didn't show them last week in anticipation of this game," said Scarvel. "I am sure they held some things back as we did, but I guess what it came down to was being who we are. They knew what we wanted to do when we had the ball and the same thing for us so it was just a matter of going out, executing and playing our game. All we could do was try and take care of the things we can take care of and for us, it worked out again."
Raiders finally score
After seeing their first two possessions stall inside the Seneca 10-yard line, the Raiders scored on their next three possessions.
Doing the honors for the first two Reynolds touchdowns was tailback Jake McBride as he went in from 3 yards out before outracing the Seneca secondary for a 54-yard jaunt to the end zone. McBride finished with 266 yards on 36 carries.
Holding on to a 14-0 lead, the Raiders extended their halftime advantage to 20-0 midway through the second period when John Uhrin bulled in from 1 yard out for the touchdown.
Sometimes statistics don't tell the story of a game, but in the first half, the numbers reflected just what happened as Reynolds held edges in rushing (219-27), total offense (271-44) and first downs (10-3).
Seneca, thanks to four personal foul penalties called against the Raiders, moved down the field for their first score, with Angelo Salvage going in from 1 yard out.
With their lead cut to 20-7, the Raiders answered the call and more as they came back to score on two of their next three possessions. Richie Burnworth hauled in a 23-yard scoring pass from quarterback Cory Shaffer before Shaffer got into the scoring act himself with a 1-yard run.
Scoring completed
Seneca's Jim Stalford completed the scoring with five seconds remaining in the game.
"We established ourselves pretty early and that was a big factor in the game," said Scarvel. "When we went down the field pretty easy on our first possession our kids got a lot of confidence. We played hard the whole game, got a couple of breaks, made some plays and things worked out for us."
Reynolds advances to play Girard Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at Erie McDowell High School.
