NORTH LIMA -- Sarah Moretti, 9, a student in the South Range Schools, has had a piece of artwork published in the "Highlights for Children" magazine. Sarah, daughter of William and Michelle Moretti, submitted a drawing of a school in the category, "What You're Thankful For," which appeared in the November issue of the magazine.
Gifted supervisor honored
BOARDMAN -- Barbara J. Acerra, supervisor of gifted education for the Trumbull County Educational Service Center, has been named Ohio Association for Gifted Children's Coordinator of the Year. She was one of 13 people from across the state to receive special recognition at a recent OAGC conference for their distinctive service to gifted children. Honorees were selected in a competitive nominating process. Acerra has been involved in the gifted field for many years and is current president of the Western Reserve Association for Gifted Children. She has fostered student participation in a number of special programs, including Arts Excel, Power of the Pen, Future Problem Solving and Midwest Talent Search. She is a member of the Odyssey of the Mind Governing Board and the Destination Imagination Governing Board in OAGC Region 1.
Open house at Akiva
YOUNGSTOWN -- Akiva Academy, a private day school offering kindergarten through sixth grade, will kick off its year-long 20th anniversary celebration with an open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday. The event will be at the school at 505 Gypsy Lane on the campus of the Jewish Community Center and will include a tour, refreshments, meetings with teachers and Akiva families and a children's book sale. Akiva opened it doors in September 1985 with a full-day kindergarten and first grade and expanded to its current grade configuration over a period of several years.
Title 1 meetings set
GIRARD -- Girard Intermediate School and Prospect Elementary School will hold meetings Wednesday and Nov. 30 to inform parents and community members about Title 1 federal programs. The Intermediate School session is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday in Room 201 while the Prospect Elementary meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in Room 5. The federally funded programs provide assistance to children in reading and math. The Girard City Schools is also offering a Child Find service designed to identify, locate and evaluate children with disabilities who may need special education services. Any person or agency aware of a child from birth to age 21 who may need those types of services should contact the superintendent's office at (330) 545-2596.
Administrator honored
CANFIELD -- The Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators has named Dr. Roan M. Craig, superintendent of the Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center, as a 2005 Distinguished Service Award recipient. Craig is president of the Ohio Association of Joint Vocational Schools and served on the Governor's Commission on Teaching Success, Leadership Mahoning Valley, the Workforce Investment Act Youth Council and the Unlimited Classroom board of directors. She received the Ohio Career Education Association's Outstanding School Administrator award in November 2004.
Student of the year
STRUTHERS --Doreen Miller of Struthers, a master of occupational therapy student at The Ohio State University, has been honored as a 2005 Ohio Occupational Therapy Association Student of the Year. Recipients of the award have participated in activities to promote occupational therapy in their community and have contributed to the professional growth of the field by participating in leadership roles in district, state and/or national associations. Miller, who did her undergraduate work at Ohio State, is vice president of the Student Occupational Therapy Association there. She has received the Active Involvement Pin Award from OOTA and served as chairman of the OOTA 2005 Conference Committee Poster Presentations.
Percussion unit honors
STRUTHERS -- The Struthers Marching Band and its Guardline aren't the only units of the band advancing to state competition. The band's percussion unit took first place in regional Ohio Music Education Association competition at Brunswick High School Oct. 22 and will compete in State Marching competition Nov. 6 at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. The percussion unit was omitted from a story last week announcing that the band took second place in its class at Brunswick while the Guardline, which remains undefeated, took first place in its category. The band is under the direction of Edward L. Stiles Jr. with assistants Sandra Stiles and Tricia Colburn. Marina Ciccone is a Guardline assistant and Jason Detecis a drum tech for the percussion unit.
