MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE Without Jacobs, Turner delivers for Bowling Green
Western Michigan became bowl eligible just one year after posting a 1-10 record.
KENT -- Anthony Turner threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score to lead Bowling Green to a 24-14 victory over Kent State Saturday.
The Falcons (5-4, 4-2 Mid-American Conference) played without quarterback Omar Jacobs, who sat out his second straight game with a shoulder injury. Jacobs is second in the conference with 20 touchdown passes.
Bowling Green finished with just 282 yards of offense but its defense forced two turnovers and held Kent State to 247 yards.
P.J. Pope had 21 carries for 81 yards for the Falcons, who finished 169 yards rushing.
Pope scored on a 9-yard run in the first quarter. Joe Timchenko kicked a 27-yard field goal and Turner threw a 1-yard TD pass to Ruben Ruiz in the second to give the Falcons a 17-7 lead at halftime.
Michael Machen completed 27 of 39 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns for the Golden Flashes (1-8, 0-6). He also threw an interception and was sacked five times.
Turner finished 10-for-16 for 77 yards and was sacked four times. His 3-yard TD run in the third made it 24-7.
Machen threw a 38-yard TD pass to Derrick Bush in the fourth. Bush had five receptions for 69 yards and two scores.
Kent State managed just 25 yards rushing in its seventh consecutive loss.
B.J. Lane carried 13 times for 49 yards for Bowling Green, which snapped a two-game losing streak.
Ball St. 23, Akron 17
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State used a goal-line stand in the game's final two minutes to hold on.
After Jason Montgomery caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Luke Getsy to pull Akron to within 23-17, a Ball State punt gave the ball back to the Zips with 5:19 remaining.
The Zips (4-5, 3-3 MAC) made four first downs on the drive that started on their own 46 to get the ball to the Cardinals' 1-yard line.
Brett Biggs was tackled for a 4-yard loss on first-and-goal. Two incomplete passes from Getsy set up a fourth-and-goal from the Ball State 5. Getsy's last pass was intercepted by Ball State's Chris Allen in the end zone to seal the game for the Cardinals (3-6, 3-3).
Ball State quarterback Joey Lynch completed 18 of 29 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown. Brian Jackson kicked three field goals and B.J. Hill returned a punt 54 yards for a touchdown for Ball State.
Getsy was 22-of-44 for 285 yards and two touchdowns and was intercepted once. Montgomery had five catches for 90 yards and two scores and Domenik Hixon caught four passes for 91 yards.
Miami (Ohio) 54, Buffalo 13
OXFORD -- Josh Betts threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns and Miami forced eight turnovers.
The RedHawks defense intercepted three passes, recovered five fumbles and finished with five sacks. The Bulls (0-9, 0-6 MAC) managed only 222 yards of offense.
Betts tossed 3- and 6-yard TD passes to Martin Nance in the first quarter and Todd Soderquist kicked a 26-yard field as Miami led 17-0 after the first quarter.
Nance has caught at least one touchdown pass in eight straight games and has 13 TD receptions this season. Betts leads the conference with 23 touchdown passes.
The RedHawks (6-3, 4-2) scored 30 unanswered points in the second quarter to take control. Robbie Wilson and Darrell Hunter each returned a fumble for a score and Soderquist kicked three more field goals for Miami.
W. Michigan 44, E. Michigan 36
DETROIT -- Western Michigan became bowl eligible just one year after posting a 1-10 record by beating Eastern Michigan at Ford Field.
Eastern Michigan tried to take the lead with a two-point conversion after Travis Lewis scored on a fourth-down, 28-yard touchdown catch with 6:39 remaining. But senior A.J. Bennett was not able to hold on to quarterback Matt Bohnet's pass, and Western Michigan stayed ahead 37-36.
The Broncos (6-3, 4-2 MAC) drove 72 yards and burned 6:03 off the clock before sophomore running back Mark Bonds scored the insurance touchdown from 1 yard out.
Freshman quarterback Tim Heller torched the Eastern Michigan defense with 243 passing yards and four scores. Heller connected with senior tight end Tony Scheffler six times for 43 yards and two touchdowns.
N. Illinois 31, Cent. Michigan 28
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Northern Illinois' Sam Hurd caught 12 passes for a school-record 266 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Huskies past Central Michigan.
Hurd, who also set the Kelly/Shorts Stadium record, scored on touchdown catches of 27, 5 and 79 yards as the Huskies (5-4, 4-2 MAC) pushed their lead to 31-14 in the third quarter
Chippewas quarterback Kent Smith, who set a school record with 33 completions and 51 attempts, threw scoring passes of 16 and 37 yards to cut the lead to 31-28 early in the fourth quarter, but Central Michigan (5-4, 4-2) failed to score again.
