Skiing statistics
What's the oldest ski resort in the United States? Which has the highest chairlift? And where is the longest ski season? Outside magazine's November issue has the answers to these and other questions in its skiing "Hot List." Outside's statistics include the following:
Sun Valley, Idaho, which opened in 1936, was described as the "oldest destination ski resort."
Meadowlands Xanadu, in East Rutherford, N.J., will be the "first indoor-skiing snow dome in the U.S." when it opens in 2007.
Breckenridge, Colo.'s new Imperial Express Superchair is the "highest chairlift in North America" at 12,840 feet.
A tunnel under construction at Snowbird, Utah, will deliver skiers via conveyor belt to Mineral Basin, making it the "most innovative lift in North America."
Mount Baker Ski Area in Washington receives the "highest annual average snowfall of any lift-served ski area in North America" at 647 inches.
Timberline, on Mount Hood, Ore., has the "longest ski season in the U.S.," with skiing until Labor Day.
