NEW WILMINGTON -- It wasn't supposed to be that easy in the opening round of the district playoffs, but Sharpsville High will certainly take it.
Moving the football up and down the field at will, the Blue Devils scored on their first four possessions to overwhelm Cambridge Springs (6-4) 49-6 Saturday in a District 10 Class A quarterfinal.
"We knew it would be a battle of the lines and once we saw our line take over, we felt that we were in pretty good shape," said Sharpsville coach Paul Piccirilli. "Week-in and week-out our line has done a good job for us and from the second half of the Kennedy [Catholic] game, we have gotten better and that is all we strive for. We run the same plays and don't try to kid anybody. We just try to get better at what we do."
Reddix multi-threat
The Blue Devils (9-1) rushed for 299 yards, led by tailback Aaron Reddix who ran for 137 yards on nine carries and one touchdown. Reddix also scored on special teams when he returned a punt 43 yards.
"Nobody has been punting to him because he just has the speed to do something good every time he touches the ball," said Piccirilli. "He just does a super job and along with [R.J.] Golub and our quarterback [P. J. O'Connor] we do have good team speed along with a big line and that is always a good combination."
The Blue Devils scored seven touchdowns with six different people getting into the act, and that brought a smile to Piccirilli's face.
"The Wing-T does that for you," he said. "We have three capable backs and we try to mix it up. Our coach does a good job of making sure that we switch it around and it just so happens that this year we have a quarterback who can throw well and overall this is just one of those good all-around teams that you only get every once in a while."
While some teams are somewhat one-dimensional, the Blue Devils are anything but that as they scored on the ground, through the air and on special teams.
The assortment
In addition to Reddix, Blue Devils scoring rushing touchdowns were Ian Brown, Golub, Ryan Morris and Tim Findley, while O'Connor hooked up with Chip Seifert for the Blue Devils' score through the air.
"I said it all year long that from the second week of the Kennedy game [Sharpsville's only loss], we have gotten better in each of those areas and I think that showed today," Piccirilli said. "We only run five or six basic plays, but we are getting better at running and blocking those plays, and right now, that is the key for us."
The Blue Devils advance to the District 10-A semifinals and will meet Region 2 champion Fairview next weekend at a site and time to be announced by PIAA officials.
