CHICAGO -- Ross Lane caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Brett Basanez with 42 seconds remaining to give Northwestern another wild victory, a 28-27 comeback win over Iowa Saturday.
After Tyrell Sutton scored on a 1-yard run to bring the Wildcats to within six with 2:10 remaining, Reggie McPherson recovered the onside kick at the Iowa 47.
On second-and-2 at the 24, Basanez ran for 6 and Iowa committed a personal foul, putting the ball on the 9. Basanez hit Lane on a slant in the end zone for the winning score, helping Northwestern overcome a 24-7 halftime deficit.
Northwestern (6-3, 4-2 Big Ten) remained in contention for the conference title and became bowl-eligible. Iowa (5-4, 3-3) needs to beat Wisconsin or Minnesota to become eligible for the postseason.
Basanez was 31-of-51 for 338 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Sutton carried 17 times for 65 yards, and Mark Philmore had 123 yards receiving.
Tim McGarigle became Northwestern's all-time leading tackler with 13 against Iowa, giving him 511 for his career to break Chuck Kern's record of 503.
Iowa's Albert Young rushed for a career-high 202 yards, and Drew Tate passed for 273.
Tate was 21-for-35 and ran for a touchdown. Herb Grigsby caught seven passes for 84 yards.
Iowa gained 492 yards against a defense that was allowing 494.8 on average and ranked 117th in the nation.
Purdue 28, Michigan St. 21
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Jerod Void ran for 134 yards and three touchdowns to help Purdue snap a six-game losing streak.
Curtis Painter, making his third straight start in place of Brandon Kirsch, passed for a career-high 226 yards and one TD as the Boilermakers (3-6, 1-5 Big Ten) rallied.
Michigan State (5-4, 2-4) came in ranked third in the nation with more than 530 yards a game. But Purdue held the Spartans to 30 yards in the second quarter, and the Boilermakers tied the game at 21 on Void's second touchdown, a 2-yard run early in the third quarter.
The Spartans reached the Purdue 25 on their next possession, but a fourth-down pass from Drew Stanton to Jerramy Scott was broken up in the end zone by Brian Hickman.
Painter hit three straight passes to help Purdue move to the Spartans 28 on the following series. He then pitched the ball to Desmond Tardy, who passed it back to Painter. The pass was incomplete, but an interference penalty on Kaleb Thornhill gave the Boilermakers the ball at the 13. Void ran in from the 6 two plays later for his third touchdown and Purdue's first lead of the game.
Michigan State's last chance ended at the Purdue 10 when Bernard Pollard intercepted a pass by Stanton with five seconds remaining.
Minnesota 42, Indiana 21
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Gary Russell ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns, and Laurence Maroney moved into second place on Minnesota's career rushing list.
Minnesota (6-3, 3-3 Big Ten) snapped a two-game losing streak and ended a 20-year drought in Bloomington. The Gophers had lost seven straight here since 1985.
But Indiana's fourth straight loss may prove the most costly. The Hoosiers (4-5, 1-5) needed two wins in their last three games to become bowl eligible for the first time since 1994 and now must visit No. 22 Michigan, where they haven't won since 1967, and play host to Purdue, which they've beaten once since 1996.
