Woman, 93, reported missing found dead in fraternity pond

The victim may have become disoriented in the dark, police said.
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A 93-year-old woman reported missing was found dead in a pond on the property of Theta Chi fraternity, police said.
Melba A. McConnell, who recently moved to an apartment at 309 N. Market St., was found by New Wilmington police at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, about 20 minutes after a family member reported her missing. The pond is immediately adjacent to the apartment complex.
Evidence at the scene suggests that the victim may have walked away from the apartment and became confused or disoriented in the dark and accidentally fell into the pond and drowned, police said.
Lawrence County Coroner Russell S. Noga responded to the scene and pronounced McConnell dead at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday. The body was taken to Ellwood City, Pa., for further examination to determine the exact cause of death.
New Wilmington volunteer ambulance personnel recovered the victim from the pond.
