Hubbard (24-2) vs. Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit (21-2)
When: 6:30 p.m.
Where: Stow-Munroe Falls High School.
Scouting report: The Eagles will be making their seventh trip to the regional where they reached the finals twice. Hubbard's Corrie Gasser, senior setter, is averaging 33 assists a game and is a good defensive player. Callie Oyler, senior outside hitter, has more than 200 kills and is an outstanding jump server. Maggie Bodgan, junior middle hitter, has 200 kills and averages four blocks a game. Karen Cover, junior, is a right-side hitter, Lauren Ferguson, sophomore outside hitter, is an outstanding server and Brittany Lang, sophomore, is a middle hitter. Kim Budd and Gabby Flynn are defensive specialists and Kate Cobey, senior, is Libero. "It will be our first meeting with Walsh Jesuit, which is real strong and has a junior that has already committed to Ohio State," Hubbard coach Chuck Montgomery said. "We are an excellent defensive team and we serve very tough. Sometimes we can get on a roll offensively, but we'll have to play a mistake free match and sound volleyball tonight." Montgomery said that Walsh Jesuit has a setter and outside hitter that have committed to Kent State and Akron and that they have a 6-foot-3-inch middle hitter. "Walsh Jesuit is very good defensively and offensive and are ranked second in the state in the AP coaches poll."
Division IV
Mathews (20-2) vs. Dalton (23-2)
When: Today, 8 p.m.
Where: Twinsburg.
Scouting report: This will be their first match against each other. Top players for Mathews include Jordan Hardval, senior, outside hitter who leads the Mustangs in digs 173. Sophie Paddock, junior middle hitter, has 244 kills and 92 blocks. Junior Jenna Manz has 225 points and 684 sets. Other players are: Karen Pilati, junior outside hitter; Breanne Gollan, junior, middle hitter; and Alexis Gill, junior weakside hitter. The Mustangs won the Northeast Athletic Conference title this season. "We are team-oriented," Mathews coach Lena Dascenzo said. "The kids are very coachable and work very hard." Dascenso said Mathews saw Dalton play last week. "They have a strong, solid team that gets their hands on everything. They have good hitters, blockers and they find the holes."
