Officials to replace nepotism policy
MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County government's flawed nepotism policy is expected to be suspended indefinitely when commissioners meet today.
The policy, which was adopted several years ago, is so restrictive that it hampers the county's ability to hire workers, said Commissioner Brian Beader at Wednesday's county agenda meeting.
For example, if two county employees who work in the same department marry, one would have to quit. Divorced spouses cannot work in the same department, nor can anyone be hired for an office where a grandparent, niece or nephew is employed.
Bill Boyle, the county's director of administrative services, said any revisions to the policy have to conform to the State Ethics Act.
Commissioner Olivia Lazor said commissioners' solicitor Mark Longietti had recommended the policy be indefinitely suspended while a new one is prepared. Commissioner Michele Brooks objected to the indefinite suspension, saying there should be a time limit placed on its replacement.
Lazor and Beader indicated they did not think a time limit is necessary even though it will probably be several months before a new nepotism policy is ready.
