MAHONING COUNTY
Austintown: Austintown Fitch High School Veterans Day Assembly is at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 in the school auditorium. The speaker is state Rep. John Boccieri of New Middletown, D-61st. Boccieri is a major in the Air Force Reserve and is a C-130 pilot with the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. He has deployed in four rotations to support troops in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The Fitch Concert Choir and Band will perform during the program, and a reception for veterans will follow at about 10 a.m.
Boardman: A Veterans Day luncheon for veterans is from 10:45 a.m. to noon Nov. 11 at West Boulevard Elementary School, 6125 West Blvd. Veterans who wish to attend the luncheon with the school's pupils must call (330) 726-3427 by Wednesday to make a reservation.
Canfield: The bells of Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., will be rung by members of the Armed Forces at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 to honor and in memory of all veterans. Also, prayers will be offered for people who died Sept 11, 2001. A Veterans of War Honor Guard will participate and taps will be played during the service, after which there will be a 21-gun salute in front of the church. Names of relatives and friends who are veterans that have been submitted by the congregation will be read aloud as the bell tolls once for each name. Special music and Scripture readings also will be part of the service, led by the Rev. Carolyn Griffeth. Members of the community are invited to attend.
Greenford: A dedication ceremony for the Green Township Veterans Memorial will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the square in Greenford. Parking will be available at the Lutheran Church. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be in the Community Center, 12200 Lisbon Road.
North Jackson: Jackson-Milton High School is having a Veterans Day celebration at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 beginning in the school gymnasium. The public is invited.
Youngstown: Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 135 will conduct the 14th annual Laying of the Roses ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Vietnam War Memorial on The Square. During the ceremony, co-sponsored by American Legion Post 472 and the International Association of Workforce Professionals, Youngstown Subchapter, one rose each will be placed at the monument in memory of Mahoning County residents killed or declared missing in action during the Vietnam War. The public is invited to attend. All veterans units may participate.
Youngstown: The 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B, and 5th United States Colored Troops, Company I, both re-enactment groups, are sponsoring a Veterans Day memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Cemetery, 344 Oak Hill Drive. Three black Civil War veterans will be recognized. They are: George Portor Logan, 44th United States Colored Troops, Company C; John S. Orr, 142nd Pennsylvania Infantry, Company A; and Christian Weick, 12th Infantry Regiment, Company E, and 3rd Infantry Cavalry Regiment, Company A. Event sponsors encourage descendants of those veterans to be present. Call (330) 744-2248 for more information.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
Girard: Girard Veterans Council, Army-Navy Union 422, American Legion Post 235 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 419 will conduct a Veterans Day parade and service at 6 p.m. Nov. 11 on Market Street behind Boardman Medical Supply. The parade lineup is at 5:30 p.m. The parade will go to the Girard-McDonald Bridge, where a wreath honoring veterans will be placed in the Mahoning River. The parade will then move to the Girard War Memorial at City Hall, 100 W. Main St., for a memorial service, after which the parade will disperse.
Niles: American Legion William McKinley Post 106 will conduct Veterans Day services at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at Niles City Cemetery, state Route 46 at Niles-Vienna Road. Army Sgt. Jeffrey Harrison is the speaker.
LAWRENCE COUNTY
Bessemer, Pa.: Area veterans and their guests are invited to attend Mohawk Junior-Senior High School's seventh annual Veterans Day Recognition Program from 9-11 a.m. Nov. 10 at the school auditorium. The program, sponsored by the Mohawk Future Business Leaders of America, will include performances by the Faithful Bells and the Mohawk Band and Chorus. Refreshments will be served.
