Police find suspected fugitive
The 70-year-old was arrested Friday in Columbus.
LILLINGTON, N.C. (AP) -- Police have charged a man in a 17-year-old slaying that stemmed from an argument over a 50-cent shot of liquor.
With the help of the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, investigators tracked down 70-year-old Alvin Delano McDougal in Columbus and arrested him Friday. He is suspected in the shooting death of Tim Simons on Dec. 21, 1988.
McDougal was living under the alias "Tim Jenkins," said Tex Lindsey of the U.S. Marshals Service. Officers found him watching television and asked if he knew why they had come.
"Yes, I know why you are here," McDougal responded.
He remained in jail in Ohio on Tuesday awaiting extradition to Harnett County.
Lillington Police Chief Frank Powers was relieved that his department had made an arrest in the town's only unsolved homicide.
"It feels really good to know even after 17 years, justice will be served," Powers said.
The slaying happened outside of an illegal nightclub after Simons, 28, argued with a woman over 50 cents she owed him. McDougal came out of the club and became involved in the argument. Simons was shot three times, Powers said.
McDougal immediately left the area. Police issued warrants for him but couldn't find him.
Powers said he and Lt. John Holly began working on the case several months ago after a review of the town's unsolved crimes.
"We were just basically having a meeting one day, and we decided most of our current cases were cleaned up, and we wanted to look back through some old cases to make sure we could close everything we could close out, and this one popped up," Powers said.
