Police pursue car from I-680 to Oakwood

AUSTINTOWN -- Police chased a car from Interstate 680 to Meridian Road and onto Oakwood Avenue in Youngstown before losing sight of it after the driver refused a stop order from an officer.
The chase began at 2:10 a.m. Monday when an officer spotted the car, a green Pontiac, attempting to go south off I-680 toward Canfield at the Route 11 exit, but the driver abruptly pulled back onto 680, going over the white lines, a police report says.
The officer pulled the car over onto the shoulder. Two men were in the driver's and front-passenger's seats, and a woman was in the back seat, the report said.
Took off
After pulling onto the shoulder, the driver got back onto the highway and continued toward Meridian Road, failing to stop even though the cruiser had on its emergency equipment, the report says.
The driver traveled onto Meridian Road around 50 mph. A police car had part of the lane blocked off, forcing the car to go south, the report says.
The car continued toward Oakwood at about 50 mph to 60 mph, the report said, with no other traffic in the area. Other Austintown police units arrived at Meridian Road and state Route 18.
The car turned east onto Oakwood and sped through all red lights. Austintown police lost sight of the car and notified Youngstown police.
Car found
Youngstown police saw the car on the Himrod Avenue Expressway and reported that the occupants fled on foot into a wooded area near Albert Street. They were not caught. The car was towed and held for Austintown detectives.
