PIAA BASEBALL Sharpsville grabs District 10 AA title

The Blue Devils posted a 7-1 victory over North East.
SLIPPERY ROCK -- The top two seeds in District 10 met Monday for the Class AA baseball championship, and top-seeded Sharpsville High prevailed, defeating No. 2 North East 7-1.
"We heard about how good their pitcher [Greg Cook] was, but today, our kids just pounded the ball," said Sharpsville coach Kirk Scurpa. "They [North East] are a well-coached, well-disciplined team and we felt it was going to be a tough game."
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Josh Fyffe singled to right, went to second on a single by Ryan Morris and scored on a single by Jarryd Summers.
Broke game open
The lead held until the bottom of the third when the Blue Devils put together four hits, a North East error, a base on balls and a hit batsman that resulted in four more runs.
"We jumped right on their ace and the kids played a heckuva game," said Scurpa. "We had hard outs and hard hits. The offense came to play in this one."
The Blue Devils' defense was flawless as they didn't commit a single error in the game.
"We made some big plays defensively when we needed them," said Scurpa. "It was just a well-balanced effort by our kids."
Summers had big game
Summers, a sophomore outfielder, finished 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and a pair of RBIs, while Morris, a junior, went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs.
"I tried to sit first-pitch fastball and today it worked for me," said Summers. "I have been slumping of late and it just felt good to get a hit."
One of Summers hits was a 380-foot triple off the fence in straightaway center.
"It was a fastball right down the middle and I got all of it," he said.
"He [Summers] threw a perfect game in the district semifinals last year and he came into this season a little passive," said Scurpa. "He hits in streaks and he was in a slump, but today, he just pounded the ball. That ball he hit to center field would have been out of most other ball parks and he hit it off a good pitcher."
Fyffe gains victory
Fyffe, a junior right-hander went the distance to pick up the win, scattering six hits. He struck out five and only walked one.
"I felt good out there today, but the guys also played good defense behind me," said Fyffe. "Jordan [Cataldi] made a couple of nice plays as did Kyle Rupp and they gave me a lot of support on the board as well. We hit the ball well, and when you score seven runs, that is always good."
Fyffe also had a single, walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
"I asked [Fyffe] for three innings and he gave me seven," said Scurpa.
The Blue Devils will play the third seed out of the WPIAL June 6 at a time and site to be determined.
