LOS ANGELES -- Even though it's been a ratings-killer, drawing about a trillion Americans a week, "Desperate Housewives" has caused much vexation and distress for some citizens. So much so that according to E! Online, Christian group American Family Association has persuaded cosmetics Goliath Mary Kay to back off from advertising on the show. Group leader Donald E. Wildmon questioned the corporation's philosophy -- "God first, family second and career third" -- in light of its planned deal with a show that depicts infidelity and promiscuity. Mary Kay relented.
Stone arrested in DUI
LOS ANGELES -- Academy Award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone was arrested on drunken-driving and drug charges at a police checkpoint in Beverly Hills, Calif., authorities said Saturday. Stone, 58, who won best director Oscars for "Platoon" and "Born on the Fourth of July," was released Saturday morning after posting $15,000 bond. Police arrested Stone, 58, Friday night at a checkpoint on Sunset Boulevard; they did not release details of an intoxication test on Stone or the type of drugs in his possession.
Crystal scores bigwith one-man show
NEW YORK -- Comedian Billy Crystal's autobiographical one-man Broadway show "700 Sundays," which opened Dec. 5, not only took just four weeks to recoup its $1.8 million costs, it's so far grossed $22 million, making it one of the most successful nonmusical shows of all time. According to the New York Post, Billy's made $10 million, or about $500,000 a week, off "Sundays," making him the highest-paid performer in Broadway history. The show closes June 12 -- before going on the road, where Billy stands to earn another $10 million.
House next to Ozzieand Harriet on market
LOS ANGELES -- The Craftsman-style Hollywood house next door to Ozzie and Harriet Nelson's home, made famous on their '50s and '60s TV series, has come on the market at $4.2 million. Sydney Thornbury, who became the inspiration for the Nelsons' TV and radio neighbor "Thorny," purchased the house, built about 1916, in 1944. The house has four bedroom suites, a maid's quarters, a new kitchen and family room, a pool, a gated motor court, a loggia with a fireplace, a guesthouse with a living room and kitchen and city views.
Nearing 65, Trebek isstill not ready to retire
NEW YORK -- Alex Trebek, come on down! The "Jeopardy!" host, who will turn 65 this summer, isn't close to retiring -- and may have another game-show host as his career model. "Who knows?" Trebek said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. "I may want to go on like Bob Barker into his late 70s and beyond." Trebek is under contract for two more seasons at "Jeopardy!" This fall will be his 22nd season, and he wants to shoot for 25, at least. The 81-year-old Barker is getting ready for his 33rd season at his game show, "The Price Is Right." "As long as I can do the job and do it at a level that satisfies me, I'd like to keep going," Trebek said.
