Police gear up to make holiday trips safer

HARRISBURG -- Motorists are reminded that members of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop D, will be undertaking several initiatives aimed at making this a safe travel Memorial Day holiday.
Troop D includes Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer counties.
One of these initiatives is the Area IV Summer Holidays Safety Initiative, which mandates that all administrative and investigative personnel who do not work on patrol during the normal course of their duties are required to dedicate a shift of patrol work throughout Memorial Day, Fourth of July or Labor Day weekends.
These personnel will patrol the roadways in addition to all available patrol unit members.
Participating members will be instructed to focus on violations relative to speeding, aggressive driving, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and proper use of seat belts and/or child safety seats.
Motorists are reminded to consider the additional holiday traffic and any anticipated weather issues when planning trips and to allow plenty of extra time for holiday travel.
