Mourners pay tribute to fire victim
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Thousands of mourners, including Mayor Jane Campbell, packed a church Saturday for the private funeral of a 13-year-old boy killed along with eight others in the city's deadliest house fire.
Organ music could be heard outside as Campbell and a large contingent of police officers and firefighters slowly made their way into The Word Church.
The large church was filled to capacity, and buses were used to bring mourners from a high school.
It was the first funeral for the victims of last weekend's fire in a low-income section of the city's east side.
Miles Cockfield was a friend of the extended family of Media Carter. Funerals for the 33-year-old Carter and four of her children, along with three relatives, will be held Tuesday at Public Hall at the Cleveland Convention Center.
Two other people survived. One was in fair condition Saturday at a MetroHealth Medical Center and the other was treated for minor injuries.
The cause of last weekend's fire has not been determined, although it apparently was accidental. The victims died of smoke inhalation.
Burial plots, caskets, vaults and burial clothes were provided free.
