HELOISE Readers' unique pet names will be featured
Dear Readers: After a recent column about polydactyl cats, we asked you to send in unique names of pets in your households. Wow! We have been deluged! There are lots of really cute names and stories, so we have decided to feature them in the next few Saturday pet columns. So, here's the first installment:
UViolet H. Mertens of Thousand Oaks, Calif., says, "My three beautiful black chow chows were named Tar, Feather and Cinders."
UMrs. Linda Limbocker of San Angelo, Texas, used to have a cockatiel named Harley and a parakeet named Davidson.
UDiane Skewes of Stafford, Va., has two canaries named Star and Heart.
UMiss Marianna Davis of North, S.C., had a dog named Kinda. She named her that because she was kinda this and kinda that.
USharon Kornas of Morrilton, Ark., says: "We have a 10-year-old husky-chow-mix male. He was supposed to be our granddaughter's dog. Her name is Olivia. So, we named him O.P. for Olivia's Puppy."
UDorothy Clement of Jacksonville, Ark., says, "My daughter had two turtles while in college who were named Hey You and Who Me."
USandy Boone of San Antonio says: "I wanted to let you know about my two 'boys.' One is a bichon fris & eacute; named Don Juan, and the other is a poodle mix named Zorro."
UHenry "Wally" Wallace of Summerfield, Fla., says: "I had a miniature black poodle named Henri's Magic Gator, 'Gator' for short. People would ask his name, and when I replied 'Gator,' most would smile or laugh. Such a fierce name for such a loving animal."
Thanks so much to all the readers who dropped us a line. Keep an eye out for next week's column to see more pet names. Heloise
P.S. Our beloved golden retriever, who adopted us many years ago (he's now in doggie Valhalla), was named J.D., short for John Doe, since we didn't know his name!
Dear Readers: Karen Klein of Laverne, Okla., sent in a picture of her daughter holding a little bird that had been brought to her after being picked up on the road. They fed it in a box under a tree until it was grown. It would come when called. Then one day it didn't come anymore, but they would still see it around. Visit my Web site, www.Heloise.com, and click on This Week's Pet to see this adorable bird. Heloise
Dear Heloise: My daughter gave this hint to me, and I think it is a great one. Since I am always looking at my computer and checking my e-mails, she said I should send myself an e-card on the first of each month to remind me to give my pet its heartworm pill. You can set up cards for several months, and this sure has helped me. I might not look or write it on my calendar, but I sure look at my e-mails. There are a lot of sites that give free e-cards. Lois Smith, San Antonio
