Group to sponsor harness horse racing

CANFIELD -- Caroline Hake, secretary of the Canfield Harness Horsemen's Association, has five retired racing horses.
"They have the good life. They don't have to go out to work for food," she said.
Hake has been a member of the Canfield Harness Horsemen's Association for about half of the club's 30-year existence.
The association is sponsoring harness horse racing at 1:30 p.m. June 5 at the Canfield Fairgrounds with free grandstand seating. Horses will be first-time racers or horses qualifying for the Northfield race track or other pari-mutuel betting tracks.
The club has more than 100 members. Some of them keep their horses at the fairgrounds where horses are trained.
Although the primary goal of the club is to promote horse racing, recently the club has been involved in community projects, including donating scholarships to local high school students.
Membership is available to anyone who is interested in horses. Members do not have to own a horse. Membership dues are $10 a year.
The club also lists names of deceased members and others who have worked for the club on a plaque. To have a former member's name engraved on the plaque, send $25 per name and the name of the person to 9191 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, Poland, OH 44514.
