Boy in stable condition after being hit by car
YOUNGSTOWN -- Hemilio R. Castro, 3, of Franklin Avenue, who was struck by a car on his street, was in stable condition Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The driver, a 31-year-old Austintown man, told police that he was unable to stop when the child ran out from behind a parked car around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A witness also told police that the boy ran from behind a parked car.
About the drug benefit
EAST PALESTINE -- Social Security representatives will present information regarding Medicare's new prescription drug benefit from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the East Palestine Memorial Public Library. The representatives will discuss financial assistance regarding the new benefit plan, which goes into effect Jan. 1, 2006.
"If you are eligible for Medicare you will automatically receive the new benefit," said Nate Freeman, district manager for the East Liverpool Social Security office.
"If you are on Medicaid and receiving Medicare you will also qualify."
Freeman also said people not on Medicaid but receiving Supplemental Security Income will qualify for the January 2006 program.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
Check for Easter Seals
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Angels of Easter Seals has raised more than $2 million for programs of the Easter Seals Center since 1977.
The group met Wednesday to present Ken Skellnar, CEO of the Easter Seals Center, with a check for $143,800 for Easter Seals programs.
The group also installed eight new members: Antionette Annichenni, Phyllis Cafaro, Sharon Hendricks, Judy Kimmel, Carol O'Neill, Mary Beth Sammartino, Jacqueline Schweiger and Mary Ann Toth. Susan Berny of Boardman was named president for this year.
The Angels of Easter Seals has 65 active, 36 sustaining and eight provisional members. The group raises funds for people with disabilities in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
Wanted man arrested
BOARDMAN -- Early Thursday, police arrested a Hopkins Road man accused of raping and assaulting a woman with whom he lived.
The 33-year-old woman told police that Jesus Febres III, 30, raped and assaulted her May 18 at their home. Police issued warrants for Febres, charging him with rape, assault and domestic violence.
On Thursday, police went to the Hopkins Road address to check on the woman's welfare after getting a call from an out-of-state relative who was concerned about her.
They found Febres at the home and arrested him. Febres also was wanted by the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department on a warrant for failure to appear.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Angie Marek, a writer with U.S. News & amp; World Report, will be a guest on the Louie Free Morning Show at 9 a.m. today on WASN 1500 AM. Marek is the author of a May 30 cover story dealing with homeland security.
In the one-hour interview, she will discuss the Department of Homeland Security's spending decisions.
WCI salutes soldiers
WARREN -- WCI Steel Inc. and United Steelworkers of America Local 1375 will unveil a banner honoring all employees who served in the armed forces, particularly those on active duty since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The banner will be unveiled at 1 p.m. Monday at WCI's main office building, 1040 Pine Ave. S.E.
