Grove City: Senior Erin Claxton (Redondo Beach, Calif.) qualified for the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Claxton will compete in the 10,000-meter run tonight. She earned one of the 19 qualifying spots in the race with a time of 36 minutes, 30.63 seconds at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships April 30. She is the college record-holder in the 10,000, shattering the previous record by nearly five minutes. Claxton won the PAC title in the 10,000 and was runner-up in the 5000.Ashland: Jackson-Milton High wrestler Nick Dierkes, the school's all-time wins leader, will continue his career at Ashland. Dierkes, who has a 139-24 career record, chose Ashland over 30 schools, including Penn State, Duke and Kent State. "I chose Ashland because they have one of the top Division II programs in the nation," said Dierkes, who plans to major in business marketing. Ashland's wrestling team was ranked 11th in the nation last season. "That's a new program at Ashland and it's another reason why I want to go there," said Dierkes. His career record is one of the five best in Eastern Ohio Wrestling League history. A four-year starter, he finished second in the state at 140 pounds as a junior and finished second at 145 pounds as a senior. He plans to wrestle at 149 pounds at Ashland. Dierkes also started four years for the Bluejays' football team.Westminster: For the second consecutive year, Westminster won the Presidents' Athletic Conference women's all-sports trophy. The Titans earned 44 points and won four of the nine PAC championships during the 2004-05 season: soccer, basketball, golf and softball. Grove City was second with 39.5 points. The Titans' men's programs (40 points) finished second to Washington & amp; Jefferson (42). With 84 points, Westminster won the combined trophy for the third straight year. W & amp;J was second with 80.
Also, Chaney's Ron Palowitz, McDonald's Jonathan Camuso, Lowellville's Rich Schrader Jr. and Beaver Local's Josh Weese will play football at Westminster. Palowitz (5-foot-8, 200 pounds), an offensive-defensive lineman, had 25 tackles and four sacks for the Cowboys. Camuso (6-3, 215), a defensive end-offensive lineman, made 50 tackles and was named first team Inter-County League. He was a four-year letterman in baseball and lettered twice in basketball and bowling. He plans to major in elementary education. Schrader (6-1, 170), a quarterback-inside linebacker, completed 62 of 115 passes for 776 yards and three TDs, while rushing 33 times for 155 yards. He had 49 solo tackles and 57 assists, and 10 of those were for losses. He had three sacks and forced two fumbles. He was the Rockets' MVP, first-team ICL and All-Northeast Ohio Inland honorable mention. Weese (6-2, 210) rushed for 766 yards and seven touchdowns and completed 3 of 4 passes for 106 yards and two TDs. He also caught six passes for 145 yards and a TD. He made 122 tackles with six quarterback sacks and he had four interceptions.Malone: Chaney High's Ira Anthony Gaines will continue his football career at Malone. He was a member of the Cowboys' Division II 2002-03-04 City Series championship and state playoff teams. He plans to major in business marketing.Bowling Green: Junior Nolan Reimold (Kennedy Catholic) was named Mid-American Conference baseball player of the year. Reimold led the MAC with 20 home runs, 60 RBIs, a .791 slugging percentage, a .498 on-base percentage and 136 total bases. He was second with a .366 batting average and was named MAC West Division player of the week a league-high four times.Akron: Right-handed pitcher Darek Stanfield (Columbiana) was named to the MAC second team for baseball. Stanfield (4-4, 2.96 ERA) secured all-conference accolades for the second straight season, after being named to the 2004 MAC first team. He broke his own school record for saves in a season with 13, and his 25 career saves is a school record and is second-most in MAC history.
