A listing of events commemorating Memorial Day.
MAHONING COUNTY
Boardman: Parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday at Center Middle School. From there, it will go north on Market Street to U.S. Route 224, then east on 224 to Boardman Township Park, where it will continue to the Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre for a memorial service at 11:30 a.m.
Canfield: Green Haven Memorial Gardens will have music, Honor Guard and a roll call remembrance at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum.
Canfield: Memorial Day service "On the Green" at 10 a.m. Monday hosted by Auspices Canfield Post 177 and American Legion, Inc. at The War Vet Museum, East Main Street, Canfield. Speaker will be state Rep. John Boccieri, a major in the Air Force Reserves.
Austintown: Parade at 10:45 a.m. and commemorative rites 11 a.m. Monday sponsored by American Legion Post 301 and V.F.W. Post 4327. The parade will follow a route from Marc's parking lot on Mahoning Avenue to Fitch High School's Veterans Memorial via Idaho Road. The American Legion and VFW honor guards will lead the parade, followed by the Fitch High School Marching Band, under the direction of Lawrence Snell. Township officials, firefighters, police officers, community organizations, Camp Fire and Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and any other organization interested in marching are invited to participate in the parade and service.
Guest speaker for the service will be Austintown Police Chief Gordon Ellis, also a member of Austintown Memorial Post 301. In conjunction with Memorial Day services, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 301, along with Legionnaires of Post 301, will be asking for donations to help support hospitalized veterans and their families by donating to and wearing a poppy made by hospitalized veterans.
Austintown: The Korean War Veterans Chapter 137 of the Mahoning Valley will have a memorial ceremony, Laying of the Roses, for the deceased veterans from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Austintown Veterans Park, 4200 block of Mahoning Avenue, Austintown. The public is invited, especially any relative of deceased veterans.
New Middletown: Memorial Day parade Monday beginning with lineup at 9 a.m. at Springfield High School. The parade will start at 9:30 and end at the war memorial at the elementary school. A short service will follow.
Lowellville: American Legion Post 247 Memorial Day service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the area of the Holy Rosary Cemetery and Poland Township Cemetery. Guest speaker will be municipal Judge James Lanzo. A light lunch will be served at Lowellville City Hall after services.
North Jackson: On Monday, a flag ceremony will be at 8:45 a.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Jackson-Milton High School. A parade will step off from the school at 9 a.m. and go to the North Jackson Cemetery where services will be conducted.
New Springfield: VFW Triangle Post 2799, 3161 E. South Range Road, will conduct a Memorial Day and dignified flag disposal service at 1 p.m. Sunday in front of the post memorial.
Youngstown: Lake Park Cemetery will have Memorial Day services on 11 a.m. Monday in the front entrance of the cemetery. Speaker will be retired Master Sgt. Paul Kauffel.
Youngstown: Meridian Arms Living Center's annual Memorial Day program will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Speaker will be the Rev. Leo Feher, visitation pastor of Christ Church, Presbyterian and Ohio State Prison chaplain. Special guests will be Lou LaCava and members of American Legion Post 301. Musical selections will be played by Greg Van Vallien with guest soloist Steve Barbato.
Struthers: Struthers Veterans Council will conduct Memorial Day services Monday starting at 9 a.m. with services at the bridge. There will be a wreath thrown in the Mahoning River honoring service members buried at sea. Services will begin at 10 a.m. at Struthers Memorial Gymnasium featuring music by the Struthers High School Band, and Deacon Paul Lisko will offer prayer.
Campbell: American Legion Post 560 and VFW Post 4723 members will meet at 8 a.m. at the Legion Hall. Services will begin at 9 a.m. at St. John's Cemetery and will proceed to Archangel St. Michael, St. John's Russian, St. Nicholas, St. Michael's and Pioneer Methodist Cemeteries, concluding with service at Campbell Memorial High School Monument at 11 a.m. Judge Robert P. Millich, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, will be the keynote speaker. Msgr. Cyril Adamko will give the invocation, and the Campbell Memorial High School Band will play a medley of tunes.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
Bristol: Bristol Township trustees are hosting a ceremony for the dedication of Bristol Township's Ohio Historical Society's Marker commemorating "Ohio's Oldest Civil War Monument" at 11 a.m. Monday at Bristol Township Park. Guest speakers are state Representative Randy Law of Warren, R-64th, and Dr. J.D. Britton of the Ohio Historical Society. Also, the Bristol High School Band, Veterans Firing Party and Civil War re-enactors will be present.
Brookfield: On Monday the annual Memorial Day Parade will form at 9 a.m. behind Brookfield Middle School on Grove Street. At 9:30 a.m., the parade will continue west on Grove Street to the south end of the Brookfield Township Green. At 10 a.m., an Ohio Historical Marker commemorating Brookfield Township will be dedicated, followed by a veterans memorial service.
Fowler: The township's annual Memorial Day observance with be Monday. Church services at Fowler United Methodist Church will be at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John Klimenko and the Rev. Joel Dickson of Fowler Community Church officiating. A parade will follow at 11 a.m. Scout groups, athletic organizations and veterans are welcome to participate. Wheelchair-accessible transportation will be available for veterans unable to walk. Services on the Green, conducted by Vienna VFW Post 3521, and a small lunch will follow. Butts Museum and the 1852 Town Hall will also be open to the public.
Kinsman: The American Legion Post 506 will host Memorial Day services Monday, beginning with a short service at 10 a.m. at Vernon United Methodist Church. There will be another service at 11 a.m. at the public square, followed by a memorial service in the auditorium of Badger High School, concluding with a brief ceremony at Kinsman Cemetery. There will be a covered dish dinner for members, their families and friends at the legion post at 1:15 p.m.
Vienna: Crown Hill Burial Park will hold two services Monday: 9 a.m. at the north end of the cemetery at the Veterans Memorial and 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Love Mausoleum.
McDonald: McDonald Volunteer Fire Department has Memorial Day Services at 1 p.m. Sunday at the memorial in Woodland Park. Featured speaker will be Robert Bowker, a U.S. Army veteran of the Iraq War. A parade beginning at the high school will precede services. John Schmidt, a local singer and songwriter will perform his original composition, "This Is America: Our Heart & amp; Soul." Cookies, coffee and juice will be served in the fire bay after the services.
Niles: Memorial Day services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Niles City Cemetery, state Route 46. Guest speaker will be Col. Anna J. Schulte, commander, 910 Airlift Wing, Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Vienna.
COLUMBIANA
Salem: The Salem Patriotic & amp; Memorial Association is hosting the Salem Memorial Day on Monday. The festivities begin with breakfast for all veterans at 8 a.m. at the American Legion Post 56 at Lincoln Avenue and East State Street. A memorial service is at 9 a.m. on the lawn outside the American Legion. The parade lineup starts at 9:30 a.m. and marches to Grandview Cemetery for a formal ceremony about 11:15 a.m. All civic and fraternal organizations interested in participating are asked to contact Sam McKinney at (330) 332-9810.
Unity: United Local High School will have "A Day of Memory" at 10 a.m. Saturday to remember those United students who have passed away during their school years at United. The families of these students will be able to plant a flower, provided by the United Student Council, in memory of their child.
LAWRENCE COUNTY
Bessemer: Earl J. Watt Post 638, American Legion, will have Memorial Day services at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Legion home, West Poland Avenue. Legion essay winners will be presented with awards by Auxiliary President Donna McGraw. Members of Post 638 with 50 and 60 years of continuous service will be recognized. The speaker will be Lt. Col. Grey Berrier II, Battalion Commander Pennsylvania Army National Guard, 1st battalion, 107th field artillery, based in New Castle. A selection of patriotic songs will be sung by Steve Pridon of Bessemer. Refreshments will follow the program.
On Monday, members will assemble at 8 a.m. at the Legion Home for a tour of area military monuments that will consist of placing a memorial wreath at each monument and bugler Pat McCready playing taps. The areas included in the tour will be Enon Valley, North Beaver Township Municipal, Battery "B" Mount Jackson, Edinburg, Hillsville and Kennedy Park.
MERCER COUNTY
Hermitage: Memorial Day parade, 10 a.m. Monday, East State Street to Hillcrest Memorial Park when a War on Terror Memorial will be unveiled. The memorial will feature the names of 2,300 members of the military killed while fighting terror.
