BOXING Fighters made good showing

The championships are scheduled for May 31.
YOUNGSTOWN -- There were few dull moments for the 420 fans at the semifinals of the K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament Tuesday night at the St. Nicholas Byzantine Center at the Grove.
Twenty-seven bouts were contested and all but five went the distance. The championships are scheduled for May 31.
Underclass featherweight Matt Tomko of Canfield came out of a free-swinging slugfest with Liberty's Kevin O'Neill to earn a decision.
"I fought hard and he is the toughest guy I have fought," said O'Neill.
Added Tomko: "Fortunately I saved my best punches for the last round."
Fitch underclass welterweight Nick Morton was originally scheduled to fight schoolmate Bobby McFarland, but requested out of that bout and lost a decision to Chaney's Bryan Chaidez.
McFarland went to 3-0 with a decision over South Range's Randy Rutushin.
"I just wanted to box and land good punches," said McFarland.
Good uppercuts
Struthers underclass light heavyweight Alan Ward went to 3-0 with a decision over Ryan Pezzuto from Girard in a fight that featured good uppercuts from both fighters.
Ursuline had two winners, underclass super heavyweight Don Hanni and upperclass super middleweight Bryan Pegues, who both stopped their opponents.
Pegues improved to 3-0 when the referee stopped his fight with Keystone's Cory Ague in round one. It was the second time in the tournament that Pegues stopped his opponent in the early going.
"I come out with a game plan and just start swinging," said Pegues.
Girard giants
Girard had impressive performances from upperclass cruiserweight Paul Perry (3-0), who decisioned slugging Jose Mateo from Campbell, and super heavyweight Mike Cole (3-0), who stopped Fitch's Julius Williams in the third round.
Girard's boxers are trained by Lou O'Neill and Nick Cochran.
"Mr. O'Neill told me to stick and move and tag him with my right and I did," said Cole.
Boardman's Jon Green (2-1) out-slugged Steve Datchuk from Niles in a junior welterweight bout.
"I just tried to be more aggressive and tag him with good right hand shots," said Green.
Two Guerrieris
Fitch's Anthony Guerrieri (2-0) decisioned Trevor Drvodelic from the Trumbull Vocational School.
Guerrieri found the range with solid right uppercuts. "I seemed tired when the fight started, but I revitalized myself with my punching," he said.
Zack Guerrieri from Canfield (3-0) stopped Ryan Clark from Sharon in the second round of a junior middleweight bout. Another Canfield standout was underclass female flyweight Brittani Collingsworth, who decisioned Jennifer Estes from Keystone.
Kayla Henderson from Life Skills won the other underclass female flyweight bout with a decision over Samantha Zalovck from Chaney.
Upperclass female featherweight Stephani Sahli from Struthers stopped Josephine Beaulieu from Mooney in the second round. Sahli, a junior who trains with Keith and Bob Burnside, used a powerful punching attack to floor Beaulieu in round two.
