Dayton Daily News: When Michigan's Calvin College announced that President Bush would be speaking at the graduation of 900 seniors last weekend, a third of the faculty signed a letter to the president saying that they very much do not like his policies.
No surprise there, except for this: Calvin is, as one article put it, a "major evangelical school."
In the past year -- more than ever -- staunch evangelical Christians have been linked in the public mind with the Republican Party and conservatism. Indeed, polls show that evangelicals voted overwhelmingly for President Bush. ...
The Calvin letter to President Bush said, "As Christians, we are called to be peacemakers and to initiate war only as a last resort. We believe your administration has launched an unjust and unjustified war in Iraq."
The letter also complains about Bush policies toward poor people.
The letter stands as a reminder that religious people can and do disagree about what religion demands in politics.
