LAWRENCE COUNTY Government employees saluted for fund raising

Government center workers raised $2,500 for the Relay for Life event.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners took some time Tuesday to salute county employees for the efforts they made recently to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Commissioners, at their weekly meeting, adopted proclamations recognizing those individuals for their participation in the annual Relay for Life event held Saturday at Shenango High School in Shenango Township. Commissioners specifically honored Cathy Wigton for her part in helping employees at the Lawrence County Government Center raise $2,500 for the event.
Commissioner Ed Fosnaught and Carol MacDonald, administrative assistant, also were recognized for their participation in the Miss Relay for Life Beauty Pageant held in March in Ellwood City to benefit the cancer society. Some $7,000 was raised through that event.
A second Relay for Life event will be June 3-4 in Ellwood City.
Maintaining property
In other business, commissioners agreed the grass is getting a little too high at several properties throughout the county being held in trust by the county Tax Claim Bureau.
To solve the problem, commissioners hired JMS Lawncare of New Castle to cut the grass. Earlier this month the county received bids for the work from three area companies.
JMS was the low-bidder and will be paid $24 each for the smaller and $29 each for the larger lots. Commissioners also revised their list of disbursements from the county's 2005 liquid fuels money to provide $10,000 to Wayne Township for various road work that is to be completed in that municipality. Also, New Castle's disbursement was increased from $10,000 to $15,000, primarily to cover the expense of paving Mill Street.
Last week, commissioners announced they would make disbursements from $150,000 in liquid fuels money provided to the county from the state to several municipalities.
