EAST SIDE Search for escapee ends with 3 arrests
Drugs, a police scanner, guns, ammunition and walkie-talkies were found.
YOUNGSTOWN -- An AK-47 assault rifle stolen from Salem was among the firearms confiscated at an East Side apartment when police went looking for a fugitive.
The search for 18-year-old Kevin Dotson of North Belle Vista Avenue led police to 667 McBride St. Dotson, who was hit in the shoulder Friday during a drive-by shooting at the Wilson High School prom, faces gun and drug charges.
Detectives, eager to end a rash of feud-related shootings on the East Side, want to question him about the people who fired into the prom crowd.
Meanwhile, police were at the McBride Street apartment at 12:15 a.m. Monday and again at 10:30 a.m. A tipster told police that Dotson was hiding out there.
Initial visit
On the first visit, police saw six to eight men scatter out the rear door and head south through the Victory Estates projects. Another man went through a hole in the fence behind the apartment and ran east toward Bennington Avenue.
The resident, William L. Washington, 49, told police Dotson wasn't there and gave permission to search the apartment, reports show. He was charged with unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance, receiving stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $75,000 at arraignment in municipal court.
Here's what police said they found in the apartment: an AK-47 assault rifle stolen out of Salem; a .30-caliber firearm; .380-caliber handgun; assorted ammunition; three walkie-talkies; portable police scanner; bag with suspected crack cocaine residue; and a drug scale.
Second visit
On the second visit, police had outstanding arrest warrants for Marquis Christian, 21, of East Forest Avenue. Officers found him and Duniek A. Christian, 20, of North Garland Avenue (relationship unknown) on the porch.
The two men ran through the apartment and out the back door, police said. Marquis Christian was caught as he tried to climb the fence.
Duniek Christian ran south, tossing a bag of suspected heroin along the way, reports show. When caught, he had a bag of suspected marijuana in his pants, police said.
Marquis Christian, because of limited space at the Mahoning County jail, was released on a court summons, the warden said. He was due in municipal court today for arraignment on charges from 2003 that include driving under suspension and drug abuse.
Duniek Christian was arraigned Tuesday. Judge Elizabeth Kobly set his bond at $10,000. He will be back in court June 1.
