VIENNA -- The 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station will conduct a natural disaster response exercise between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. today to help evaluate the response capabilities of safety forces on the base.
The wing is advising people that its loudspeaker system will be used to broadcast alert warning tones, and the tones shouldn't be misinterpreted as actual weather warning tones such as tornado sirens.
Ground burst simulators will be used, and residents shouldn't worry about the explosion sounds.
Arson suspects arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two boys suspected of setting fire to two vacant houses on the East Side around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday were arrested and taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center to face aggravated arson charges, said Lt. Kevin Johnson of the arson bureau.
Johnson said the East Side boys, Jesse Hudson, 15, and Felix Ridriguez, 13, are eighth-graders at East Middle School.
Johnson said trash was set on fire inside 1695 Clay St. and furniture was ignited at 1690 Clay St. He said damage to 1690 Clay was around $5,000 and damage to 1695 Clay roughly $500.
A Tree City again
CANFIELD -- The Canfield Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board will be presenting the Tree City flag to the mayor of Canfield and city council members at 6 p.m. June 1 at the Francis J. McLaughlin Memorial Building.
This is the 24th year that Canfield has been named a Tree City USA.

Fire hydrant flushing
HOWLAND -- The Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer's Department is flushing fire hydrants in the Howland area through Friday.
The area involved is known as the Mosquito Creek Water District System. It includes the following streets: Pine View, Raglan, Castle Rock, Trefeathen, Knickerbocker, Sutton, Perth, Penbrook, Bridle, Castillion, Raccoon, Micawber, Pegotty, Rolling Meadows.
The flushing may result in some low pressure at times and discoloration of the water.
YMCA Memorial run
YOUNGSTOWN -- The following roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed for the YMCA Memorial Five-Mile Run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday: East Glacier Drive at Orange and High Streets and Falls Avenue, West Glacier Drive at Price Road and Irving Place, including a section of Price Road.
The closed drives are north of Slippery Rock Pavilion; drives south of the pavilion will remain open.
During this event, access to Fellows Riverside Gardens will be available from Mahoning Avenue only.
Help for the hungry
AUSTINTOWN -- The Big Lots store at 4341 Kirk Road is collecting food and raising funds to feed hungry families in the community from Friday through Monday.
People can stop between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to drop off food, grab a hot dog and drink and take part in a drawing for merchandise.
All of the proceeds will go to Second Harvest Food Bank.
"We are grateful to Big Lots for their support of our work," said Mike Iberis, executive director of the food bank.
Second Harvest Food Bank solicits, stores and distributes food to more than 200 hunger relief programs in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
Similar events are taking place at the Big Lots Stores in Niles and on Midlothian Boulevard in Youngstown.
