COLUMBUS -- The Youngstown Border Hawks will receive part of the $38,000 that the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation is donating to Ohio youth ice hockey programs.
Sharing the grant will be the Ohio Junior AAA Blue Jackets, Columbus Junior B Blue Jackets, Ohio Sled Hockey, Columbus Amateur Hockey Association, Athens Youth Hockey Association, Columbus Diversity Task Force and the Quebec Pee Wee Team.
In all, the NHL team awarded $140,500 in grants to organizations which serve the Foundation's three main pillars of giving: pediatric cancer, children's health and safety, and education.
Twenty-five percent of the annual grant distribution was dedicated to the development of youth hockey. Since its inception in March 2000, the Foundation has granted more than $800,000 to the local community.
"Being able to award more than $140,000 in grants to deserving local organizations and individuals has been a bright spot in what has been an extremely challenging year for our franchise and the National Hockey League," said John H. McConnell, Blue Jackets majority owner. "I continue to be very proud of the Foundation's unwavering commitment to this community, which has been so supportive of our organization."
Other recipients are Columbus Children's Hospital Sibling Support Program ($36,500), Hope Street Kids $20,000), Big Brothers/Big Sisters ($5,000), The Salvation Army ($5,000) and the Make-a-Wish Foundation ($3,000).
