PREP BASEBALL Teams from Mahoning County sweep Coca Cola all-star classic at Cene Park



The Division III-IV team posted a 6-2 win while the I-II team coasted 10-0.
STRUTHERS -- Mahoning County swept both games from Trumbull County in the Coca Cola High School Baseball Classic held at Cene Park Saturday night.
In the opener between players from Division III and IV schools, Mahoning won 6-2, while in the nightcap Mahoning cruised to a 10-0 win in a game featuring players from Div. I and II schools.
In the first contest Mahoning was outhit 8-6, but scored runs in four different innings to just one for Trumbull. A key in the game was that the four Mahoning pitchers walked just two batters while Trumbull pitchers issued seven free passes in the game.
Scored without a hit
Mahoning scored the first two runs of the game without a hit. In the third a two out walk to Steve Bowles (Jackson Milton) was followed by a pair of wild pitches and a passed ball to plate the first run of the game. Melio Rios (Springfield) led off the fourth by reaching on an error. Two more wild pitches, and another error scored the second run of the game.
In the fifth inning Stan Gozur walked and moved to second on a single by Frazier Tirikos (both of Campbell Memorial). Ryan Pauken (Western Reserve) doubled down the left field line to drive home both runners.
Trumbull gets on the board
Trumbull got on the board finally in the sixth. A leadoff walk to Jon Dubic (Mineral Ridge) started the rally. With one out a single by Brian Daugherty (Brookfield) put runners on the corners. Following a walk to Matt Weymer (Mathews) to load the bases Tim Grantz (Mineral Ridge) drove a single to left scoring two runs making the score 4-2.
Patrick Bader (Youngstown Christian) led off the seventh for Mahoning with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice by Bowles. Tirikos had his second hit of the game with a bunt, and the last run scored on sacrifice fly by Matt Nagy (Jackson Milton).
Gozur picked up the win as he pitched two perfect innings with four strikeouts. Weymer suffered the loss for Trumbull.
Mahoning jumps out early
In the second game Mahoning scored five times in the first inning, and their four pitchers allowed just one hit in the 10-0 victory. J.R. Gibson (West Branch) had a double and a single, while Josh McKenney (Canfield) added a triple and single with three RBIs. Matt Guerrieri (Canfield), and Tom Enyeart (Chaney) had two hits each, while Jim King (West Branch) added a double and three RBIs.
Gibson started the game with a double and after Zach Guerrieri (Canfield) reached on an error, Enyeart, and Andy Todor (West Branch) were hit by pitches to drive home the first run of the game. Todor was also hit by a pitch again later in the game. The second run scored on a ground out by Matt Guerrieri, and McKenney drove home two more with his triple. McKenney scored the last run on King's grounder.
Gaspar gets victory
Tad Gaspar (West Branch) pitched the first two innings for the win, striking out three. McKenney pitched a perfect third and fourth with three strikeouts. Tyler Pearce (Canfield) came on to pitch in the fifth. Randy Burgett (Liberty) singled to start the inning for the first hit of the game for Trumbull. Enyeart pitched a perfect seventh to complete the shutout.
Both teams had trouble defensively as there were twelve errors in the game, seven by Trumbull and five by Mahoning. Burgett started and suffered the defeat on the mound for Trumbull.
Players from Austintown Fitch, Boardman, Poland, Champion, and Mooney did not play in the game due to their high school season not being finished. Struthers players could not play due to the school's prom.
