CANFIELD -- Caitlin Metzger, a student at the Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center, won a gold medal at the Ohio SkillsUSA championship. The competition was held recently in Columbus, and was part of the 2005 state conference, which drew 2,500 members from career-technical programs throughout Ohio.
As the top qualifier in the criminal justice contest, Metzger will compete in the SkillsUSA national championship in Kansas City, Mo., June 22-23. She is from Western Reserve High School and is a junior in the MCCTC Criminal Justice program, taught by William Flora, of Lowellville.
In the criminal justice competition, a variety of skills were tested, including criminal and latent fingerprinting, interviewing and crime scene investigation, along with a written exam.
Professor joins effort tocreate Web site for heiress
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Russell Martin, associate professor of history at Westminster College, recently joined a team of translators who are creating an English-language version of the Web page for Her Imperial Highness, Grand Duchess Maria Vladmirova, the current legal heiress to the vacant throne of Russia.
"The Web site, www.imperialhouse.ru, contains separate pages outlining the claims of the Grand Duchess to the throne, the laws of succession, and other documents such as press releases and official statements by the Heiress," Martin said. Martin has appeared on "A & amp;E Biography" in a broadcast on Ivan the Terrible as an expert on the controversial ruler.
Bazetta pupil's designselected for calendar
BAZETTA -- Megan Laws, a pupil at Bazetta Elementary School, was one of only 12 pupils across Ohio to have her design selected for a page in the Ohio State Fire Prevention Calendar, said Ray Gallatin, fire prevention specialist for the Bazetta Township Fire Department. She will get special recognition during a ceremony at the school June 2, he said.
Woodworking studentsgrab $5,000, plaque
SALEM -- Students of the Salem High School Woods Technology Program were the grand-prize winners of the Minwax Community Craftsman Award, which recognizes woodworkers who demonstrate a commitment to community improvement through their woodworking skills. Bruce Johnson, national spokesman for Minwax, will present the award plaque and a $5,000 check to Ken Peters and the students Tuesday at the school.
Low-interest student loans
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Medical Society Foundation is accepting applications for low-interest student loans.
Applicants must be residents of Mahoning or Trumbull counties and enrolled in medical school or a school of osteopathic medicine, in the Bridge Program in their third year or higher, or studying at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
Interest on the loans is 1 percent below the prime rate. Interest is forgiven if the loan recipient returns to the Mahoning or Trumbull counties to practice medicine and becomes a member of the Mahoning County Medical Society.

YSU holding gay/lesbianstudent teleconference
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State University's Office of Student Diversity Programs is holding a teleconference called "Overcome GLBTQ Challenges" from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Presidential Suite of Kilcawley Center.
The conference will focus on how campuses are creating a welcoming and safe environment for homosexual, bisexual and transgender students, according to a press release.
Presenters include Joe Bertolino, vice president for student affairs and chairman of the Department of Student Personnel at Queens College in New York, and Bill Leipold, assistant dean of the School of Criminal Justice for Rutgers University-Newark campus in New Jersey.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Delores Crawford, retired executive director of Mahoning County Job and Family Services, and Tammy King, chairwoman of Youngstown State University's criminal justice department, will receive the eighth annual Public Service Award at 11:30 a.m. June 8 in the Ohio Room of YSU's Kilcawley Center.
The awards are presented by YSU's Public Service Institute to persons in the community and university who have gone above the call of duty to serve the public and make an impact in the Mahoning Valley.

School enrollment open
GIRARD -- The Girard City School District will be accepting applications for open enrollment in the following grades for the 2005-06 school year: second, fourth, fifth, eighth, 11th and 12th.
Applications can be picked up in the superintendent's office at 704 E. Prospect St. and must be returned by May 27.
Weathersfield districtraises lunch prices
MINERAL RIDGE -- The cost of lunches will increase next year in the Weathersfield school district.
The school board voted last week to raise pupils' daily lunch fees at Seaborn Elementary to $1.75, the middle school to $2 and the high school to $2.30. Adult lunches will be $2.75.
The price of milk will also increase by 10 cents to 50 cents. Superintendent Michael Hanshaw said that with the increased cost of gasoline, suppliers who deliver milk and other food supplies are now charging the district surcharges on deliveries.
Middle school to presentspring band concert
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Center Middle School Band Department will present its annual spring concert in the Center Middle School auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday.
This concert will feature the debut of the Fifth Grade Concert Band, performances by the Sixth and Seventh Grade Concert Bands, and the Seventh and Eighth Grade Jazz Ensembles. Musical selections will include the hit song "Mr. Lonely," Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train," selections from "West Side Story," "Star Wars" and "Harry Potter," and the traditional finale feature John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."
Adult admission is $2; students, $1; senior citizens and preschool children will be admitted free.
