Police make two arrests; event goes on as planned

YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men were arrested Friday shortly after shots were fired near Woodrow Wilson High School as more than 200 students gathered at the school for the traditional promenade walk-in.
One of the men, Kevin Dotson, was also injured. Dotson, 18, no address given, was in satisfactory condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center late Friday with a shoulder wound. Dotson is charged with two felony counts, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a deadly weapon on school premises. No court date has set, pending his release from the hospital.
Ronaldo Miller, 21, of East Dewey Avenue, Youngstown, also was arrested after the shooting. He is in the Mahoning County jail, also charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a deadly weapon on school premises. He also was charged with obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
Miller is set for arraignment Monday. Bond has not been set.
From police reports
According to police reports, Dotson admitted carrying a gun but said he did not fire it.
The second shooting victim was a 17-year-old girl, whose name was not released. She was shot in the left foot, according to a nursing supervisor at St. Elizabeth Health Center. She was in stable condition late Friday.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. near the front entrance to the school on Gibson Street as a crowd gathered for the promenade, an event open to parents and others who want to see students dressed for the prom.
According to Youngstown Police Department reports, the girl said she and her sister were walking along Gibson Street when her sister told her to run, after noticing something going on nearby. She said she started to run but then felt a sharp pain in her left foot.
Police apprehended Miller near the school and threw him to the ground. He reached in his pants and found a gun, which he threw behind him, reports said.
Miller then broke free from police and started running. Police caught up with him on Wilbur Avenue and took him into custody.
Two revolvers -- one a .32 caliber, the other a .44 caliber -- were found near the scene. The .44-caliber revolver contained five live rounds, reports said.
Police located three spent casings on the sidewalk in front of the school, according to Youngstown police.
The Wilson prom went on as scheduled at The Embassy Club in Struthers. About four hours after the shooting, the Embassy parking lot was full and uniformed police officers stood by the club's entrance.
