Female boxers fight in KO Drugs tourney
Sixteen undefeated fighters are scheduled for this week's event.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The semifinals of the 18th KO Drugs High School Boxing Tournament will have 34 bouts, 17 in both the underclass and upperclass divisions, with a few new looks Tuesday night at the St. Nicholas Byzantine Center at the Grove on Shady Run Road.
Austintown Fitch, with 14 winners the last two weeks, will have eight boxers going, as will Canfield. Boardman has six fighters scheduled.
Tuesday's fights will feature 16 undefeated (2-0) fighters and for the first time in this year's tournaments the female entrants will be in the ring.
Two of the fights will feature Chaney's Samantha Zalovck in the ring with Kayla Henderson from Life Skills, and Jennifer Estes from Keystone taking on Brittani Collingsworth from Canfield. There will be two upperclass featherweight bouts, with Miranda Spotleson of Cardinal Mooney going against Sheena Lockett from Fitch, and Josephine Beaulieu from Mooney battling Stephani Sahli from Struthers.
Heavyweight action
There will be a combination of eight heavyweights and eight super heavyweights in action.
Two undefeated underclass heavyweights, James Neopolitan of Struthers and Mooney's Zach Dietz, will be facing tough opponents in Bill Bowden from South Range and Springfield's Gary LaRowe, who both are 1-1.
Upperclass heavyweights Dan Bayus of Brookfield and Pat Donovan of Canfield, both 2-0, will face challenges from Robert Randall (1-0) from Girard and Boardman's Ryan Basora (1-1).
