Serving Molotov cocktails on E. Side
Detectives may get arrest warrants soon, a lieutenant said.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Urban terrorism continues on the East Side, kicked up a notch with Molotov cocktails in an arson attempt.
At 12:20 a.m. Thursday, police were sent to the area of Bruce and Shehy streets to check out a report of gunfire. Officers spoke to the residents of 31 and 37 S. Bruce.
On Bruce
At 37 S. Bruce, the resident said he was in an upstairs bedroom and saw shots fired from a dark-colored car traveling toward his home. The resident dropped to the floor.
At 31 S. Bruce, two people heard something shatter against the living room window and dropped to the floor as bullets hit the house.
Police found several bullet holes in both houses.
They also found two used but ineffective Molotov cocktails, one on the sidewalk in front of 31 S. Bruce and the second on the porch. The cocktail term refers to glass containers filled with gas used by arsonists.
Three unused Molotov cocktails also were found in a blue plastic milk crate on the sidewalk near Shehy and taken as evidence.
Previous shots
As with other shootings this week on the East Side, police found spent rounds from an assault rifle (17) and spent shotgun shells (five). They also collected three spent 9mm rounds.
Gunfire on the East Side began early Monday with a homicide at 1550 Oak Lane. At least 20 rounds from an assault rifle were fired at the house at 1:15 a.m., one round killing 22-year-old Lakeita Nolan.
At 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, at least 35 rounds from an assault rifle were fired at 1341 and 1343 Berwick Ave., police said. One round hit 16-year-old Shylinda McBride in her leg at 1343 Berwick as she was walking through the living room, reports show.
Police collected 34 spent rounds and one live round from the road. No motive or suspects were listed.
Same time, new place
Nearby, also at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, gunfire was reported in the 1300 block of Lansdowne Boulevard. Police said a shotgun was used to fire into a house, breaking a dinette window.
The resident told police she was on the phone when she heard gunfire. She didn't know who may have shot at her house.
A neighbor reported hearing at least 20 shots in the 1300 block, likely from different firearms, police said.
It wasn't until later Wednesday morning, at 7 a.m., when the residents of 1336 and 1340 Berwick discovered bullet holes in their houses. Each house had been hit twice. A ski mask found in the rear yard of 1336 Berwick was taken as evidence.
Possible leads
Lt. Rod Foley said Thursday that arrest warrants may be filed soon.
He said Detective Sgts. Ron Rodway and Daryl Martin aren't sure yet if the shootings on Bruce are tied to the shootings on Berwick and Lansdowne.
Foley said detectives believe the Berwick shootings involve two groups fighting over a sizable amount of money. He said they surmise the feud is drug related but can't substantiate that yet.
