Teen hit after 35 shots fired at 2 homes

The chief said detectives are pulling old cases and have a few leads.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The East Side is under fire this week.
The gunfire began early Monday with a homicide at 1550 Oak Lane. At least 20 rounds from an assault rifle were fired at the house at 1:15 a.m., one round killing 22-year-old Lakeita Nolan, police said.
At 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, at least 35 rounds from an assault rifle were fired at 1341 and 1343 Berwick Avenue, police said. One round hit 16-year-old Shylinda McBride in her leg at 1343 Berwick, reports show.
The girl told police she was walking through the living room when she heard shooting outside the house and then felt a burning in her leg. Police said the bullet entered her left shin/calf area.
She was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.
Police collected 34 spent rounds and one live round from the road. No motive or suspects were listed.
Nearby, also at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, gunfire was reported in the 1300 block of Lansdowne Boulevard. Police said a shotgun was used to fire into a house, breaking a dinette window.
The resident told police she was on the phone when she heard gunfire. She didn't know who may have shot at her house.
Neighbor's accounts
A neighbor reported hearing at least 20 shots in the 1300 block, likely from different firearms, police said.
The neighbor also heard a man shouting "Please! No! No!" as if pleading for his life, reports show.
A witness saw a car stop and a man fire out of the passenger side window toward a house, police said.
Police Chief Robert E. Bush Jr. said Wednesday that detectives are pulling old cases to determine the type of weapons used. He said it's unknown at this time if the shootings are connected but believes the motive in one or more attacks may be retaliation.
Detective Sgts. Ron Rodway and Daryl Martin, meanwhile, continue to investigate the Nolan homicide on Oak Lane and have a few leads, the chief said.
At the scene, Rodway said 16 to 17 bullets penetrated the front of the house and 21 casings were collected from the front yard, likely from one gun.
First officers on the scene found Nolan lying on her back in the living room with a bullet in her back. A man who was in the house when the shooting occurred was questioned, police said.
Martin said Nolan, originally from Youngstown, moved back a month ago from Lorain.
Nolan's death is the city's 12th homicide of the year, one more than at this time last year.
