YOUNGSTOWN -- A tractor-trailer dripping oil Wednesday morning on North Meridian Road near Henricks Road on caused police to shut down the northbound lane for about two hours. The fire department was called in with an absorbent and a street sweeper was used to clean up the mess, police said.
Six vehicles robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Six vehicles parked in a lot at Grace Services on North Meridian Road were broken into and various equipment worth roughly $8,500 was stolen, police said. The break-in was discovered Tuesday. The lot is enclosed by a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire.
Seat-belt crusade to start in Valley
NILES -- The statewide "What's Holding You Back? Click It or Ticket" campaign kickoff for Trumbull and Mahoning counties will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eastwood Stadium behind Eastwood Mall.
The campaign promotes the use of safety belts through education and enforcement.
Police departments will distribute vouchers for tickets at a Mahoning Valley Scrappers home game to people wearing safety belts.
The campaign kickoff will also include a free lunch and an appearance by Scrappy, the Scrappers' mascot.
Reception is set for superintendent
AUSTINTOWN -- A reception to welcome Doug Heuer, new Austintown schools superintendent, will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Austintown Public Library, 600 N. Raccoon Road. The reception is sponsored by the Austintown Growth Foundation. The public is invited.
Leetonia Arbor Day affair
LEETONIA -- The Leetonia Shade Tree Commission will host an Arbor Day ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday in Wick Park. A pin oak tree has been planted at the park to commemorate Arbor Day.
The village received two awards from the National Arbor Day Foundation at the Tree City USA Ceremonies held in Minerva on April 26: a "Growth" Award, along with being a "Tree City USA" recipient for the 14th consecutive year.
Bubbles at family event
HOWLAND -- Howland Community Church, 198 Niles-Cortland Road, is sponsoring a family event, "Bubbles and Kites and Fun," from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The event is open for children age 3 through 10 and their families to come and enjoy bubble blowing and a chance to color and fly kites. All are welcome. Call (330) 856-3628 for more information.
Police bike safety show
COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana Police Department will host a bicycle safety program at 10 a.m. Saturday at Firestone Park. The program will begin with a safety talk and video. Bicycles will be inspected before bikers ride the rodeo course. Free bicycle helmets will be given out while supplies last. Participants will have a chance to win various prizes, including a girl's bike or a boy's bike. Participants will also receive a free Columbiana bike license and a certificate. Rain date for the event is June 4.
Parade costume contest
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Optimist Club will sponsor a bicentennial costume competition to be held at 10 a.m. May 30 during the Boardman Memorial Day Parade.
The competition is in cooperation with the Arms Family Museum and Mahoning Valley Historical Society as well as the Boardman Historical Society.
The judge's stand will be at the Boardman Fire Station on U.S. Route 224 near Southern Boulevard. The awards will be announced at Boardman Park after the Memorial Day services.

Memorial event planned at Brookfield fire hall
