Country music legend George Jones comes to Canton Memorial Civic Center at 8 p.m. Ticketmaster. If you're a new country fan, it might be fun to find out where those people on the radio got their inspiration.
Two revues, two overlapping eras, ironically overlapping in their runs:
"Smokey Joe's Cafe" brings back the music of the early rock and soul era at 8 p.m., Youngstown Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane. (330)788-8739.
"My Way," meanwhile, pays homage to Frank Sinatra, who positively loathed the rockers and all they stood for. At 8 p.m., New Castle (Pa.) Playhouse, 202 E. Long Ave. (724) 654-3437
Here's one that isn't toe-tapping fun: "Block 5" is the story of a small group of prisoners at a Nazi concentration camp, based on a survivor's account. It's locally written, directed and acted. At 8 p.m., Oakland Center for the Arts, Boardman Street, Youngstown. (330) 799-6176.
Johnny Winter, who personifies the rockin' blues, will at in Pittsburgh at 8:30 p.m. at the Rex Theater. (412) 381-6811.
The Rex seems to be having itself quite a weekend. Dick Dale, king of the surf guitar, will be there at 8:30 p.m. (412) 381-6811.
A little something different for all you rockers out there: "For Those About to Rock: An Evening of Performance Art," will be presented at 7 p.m. at Mattress Factory, 500 Sampsonia Way, Pittsburgh. (412) 231-3169 or www.mattress.org.
If you'd like to hear some beautiful voices singing in harmony, check out the Youngstown Symphony Chorus Concert for the Masses, 4 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1429 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, www.ysc-online.org. The chorus is one of the city's little-known treasures.
For those old enough to remember, "Cousin Brucie" used to be the DJ who brought us rock hits first, working out of New York City. He and others get to reminisce at "The Heart of Rock 'N' Roll" at 6 p.m. at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland. Ticketmaster.
Holding true to their country-folk roots, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Mindy Smith bring their show to Allen Theatre, Playhouse Square, Cleveland, at 7 p.m.. www.playhousesquare.com or (216) 241-6000 or (800) 766-6048.
Another of rock's treasures, Gary U.S. Bonds, performs in the Nite-Time Rock 'n' Roll show at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the House of Blues, Cleveland. Ticketmaster.
At 8 p.m. Tuesday, Alison Krauss & amp; Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas appear at the Rex Theater, Pittsburgh. (412) 323-1919. For those who have been living under a rock, Krauss' outfit is just about the hottest bluegrass group around. And Douglas is from Trumbull County.
Also Tuesday, you get a second chance to hear the Youngstown Symphony Chorus Concert for the Masses, this time at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown. www.ysc-online.org.
Bobby McFerrin, left, may be tired of "Don't Worry, Be Happy," but he's lucky that lots of people still remember him fo rit. He'll perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh. (412) 392-4900 or www.pittsburghsymphony.org.
At 7:30 p.m Thursday: Kenny Chesney must not have had a very long honeymoon, 'cause he's back on the road with Gretchen Wilson and Pat Green at Value City Arena at Jerome Schottenstein Center, Columbus. www.ticketmaster.com. or (614) 431-3600.
Ruben Studdard, the "American Idol" vocalist, performs 9 p.m. May 29, Tower City Amphitheater, Cleveland. Ticketmaster.
If you really want to rock out, check out Judas Priest with Queensryche, 7:30 May 30, at Blossom, brought to you by the House of Blues, Cleveland. Ticketmaster. These guys define loud and proud.
