PREP ROUNDUP Canfield tops Howland for share of Metro Athletic Conference title



The Cardinals' 2-1 win gave them an 11-1 MAC mark to tie with Poland.
HOWLAND -- Courtney Porter singled home Stephanie Zunic with the winning run in the top of the sixth inning as the Canfield High softball team posted a 2-1 victory over Howland Tuesday in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
The win gave the Cardinals a share of the MAC title with Poland as both teams finished with 11-1 records.
Lauren Sulick (9-2) of Canfield came on in relief in the fourth inning and pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts to pick up the win.
Jena Ervin, who celebrated her 16th birthday Tuesday, went 3-for-3, was intentionally walked once and scored once for the Cardinals (20-4).
Erin Gilmour hit a pair of singles for the Tigers (13-10, 6-5).
Boardman 1,North Canton 0
BOARDMAN -- With two outs in the first inning, Boardman's Ashley DiDomenico's fly ball was dropped by the North Canton Hoover left fielder and she raced to second on the error. Mallory Hay's single scored her with the only run of the contest.
That was the only hit that Hoover (19-5, 9-4 Federal League) losing pitcher Jessica Simpson (15-4) allowed as she struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter.
The Spartans' (15-9, 7-5) DiDomenico (14-7) also turned in an outstanding pitching performance as she limited NCH to two hits with nine strikeouts.
On Monday, Boardman defeated Jackson 3-0.
DiDomenico (12-7) pitched a complete game three-hitter with eight strikeouts and she also hit two singles and scored the first run of the contest in the third inning.
The Spartans got a double and single and a run driven in each by Danielle Burin and Hay.
Lisa Habinak hit a triple for Jackson (14-12, 5-8).
Mineral Ridge 11,Girard 5
GIRARD -- The Rams (15-11) scored nine of their runs in the first innings. Heather Reinhart hit a double, two singles, drove in two runs and scored twice. Chelsea Fridley added a double two singles and drove in three runs. Winner pitcher Emily Sheller hit a pair of singles and drove in a run and Melanie Sparks hit two singles, drove in a run, scored once and stole a base.
Morgan Tondo paced the Indians (7-18) with three singles.
Liberty 9,Salem 4
LIBERTY -- The Leopards (4-14) scored seven runs during the first two innings. Winning pitcher Michelle Dykes (1-1) aided her own cause with a double and singles and she drove in four runs and scored twice.
Salem slipped to 5-18.
Southeast 8,Mogadore 2
RAVENNA -- Jess Hines hit a triple, double, single and drove in three runs for the Pirates (10-13). Danielle Kaley also hit a triple, double, single and drove in a run.
Kristen Francis hit a double and two singles for Mogadore (7-17).
Baseball
BELOIT -- West Branch (15-8) scored five runs in the third inning and four in the sixth to defeat Salem 9-3.
J.R. Gibson went 3-for-4 with a double and he drove in two runs. Andy Todor went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs. Tad Gaspar went 2-for-3 and drove in a run.
Grant Sevek paced the Quakers (14-11) with a home run.
Southeast 9,Mogadore 1
RAVENNA -- Richard Hedrick hit two home runs and a single and drove in three runs for the Pirates (4-19). Greg Lemley added a home run and single.
Brian Bineger (4-1) of the Pirates scattered six hits to pick up the win.
J.J. Popio hit a double for Mogadore (7-17).
Windham 5,Mathews 4
STRUTHERS -- Brent Fincham drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then stole home with the deciding run as Windham advanced to the Division IV regional tournament by beating Mathews.
Fincham also came in to pitch the final two innings, striking out the side in both innings to pick up the victory.
Mathews took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Bombers rallied to tie the score after five and then won it in the sixth.
