Kylie Minogue diagnosed with breast cancer
SYDNEY, Australia -- Australian pop star Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo immediate treatment, her management team said. Her tour of Australia was postponed following the announcement. A statement from Minogue's management said the 36-year-old's diagnosis was confirmed this week during a visit to the southern Australian city of Melbourne. "Whilst at home in Melbourne with her family this week prior to her Australian Showgirl Tour, Kylie was diagnosed with early breast cancer," the statement said. In the statement, Minogue said: "I was so looking forward to bringing the Showgirl tour to Australian audiences, and am sorry to have to disappoint my fans. Nevertheless, hopefully all will work out fine and I'll be back with you all again soon." Michael Gudinski, head of Frontier Touring, the company promoting her Australian tour, said, "I'm just hoping and praying because the doctors found it so early that everything will be OK," he told an Australian television network.
Nothing luxurious here,'Apprentice' winners say
NEW YORK -- So how glamorous is it to have one of those $250,000-a-year post-"Apprentice" jobs working for Donald Trump? Well, according to a Newsweek report about "Apprentice" winners Kelly Perdew and Bill Rancic, real reality kind of bites. Do they get a luxurious corner office with a view? Forget it! The mag says Perdew's desk is in a small, windowless space next to Melania Trump's assistant. The winners' work isn't much better. Rancic, who was supposed to run the $800-mil Chicago: Trump Tower project, spends his time promoting it in pep talks for potential buyers -- he's the semi-celeb face of the Chicago complex, not its boss. Same for Perdew, who gives speeches to salespeople hyping the Big Apple's most powerful comb-over and his reality show. Both kids tell Newsweek they love their gigs and wouldn't have it any other way. Meanwhile, The Donald will name the third winner of the "Apprentice" on Thursday.
Hilfiger set for 'The Cut'
NEW YORK -- Forget his Nantucket neighbors. Tommy Hilfiger is running with a new crowd this summer, including Miss Minnesota 2004, a professional skateboarder and a stay-at-home mom from St. Louis. They're among the 16 contestants on CBS' new reality show "The Cut," which aims to recreate Hilfiger's own rags-to-riches story. They'll live "Tommy's life in fast forward" and be faced with assignments that test their talent, business acumen, sales and marketing savvy, social skills, resourcefulness and, of course, their sense of style. Hilfiger hosts the show, which premieres June 9 at 8 p.m. (ET). Contestants live in a Manhattan loft. The winner will design a collection under Hilfiger's label. The participants are Felix, 35, a skateboarder from Los Angeles; Jeff, 42, a salesman from Chicago; Deanna, 23, a retail manager and stylist in Los Angeles; Chris C., 26, a San Francisco student; Wes, 25, a creative director from New Orleans; Jessica, 22, Miss Minnesota USA, 2004; Vlada, 24, a sales associate in Chesterfield, Mo.; Julie, 37, a mother with three children from St. Louis. Liz, 30, a publisher/editor from Beverly Hills, Calif.; Amy, 26, a fashion stylist from Chicago; Chris S., 25, a Nashville, Tenn., restaurateur; Shauna, 39, a socialite from New Orleans; Rob, 35, a graphic designer from Brooklyn; Tommy, 42, a Chicago teacher; Princess, 22, a freelance designer from Philadelphia; and James, 27, from Encinitas, Calif., who works in production for a sportswear company.
Gumby turns 50 this year
LOS ANGELES -- While Eddie Murphy's characterization of Gumby might be considered far more compelling than the original, it's fitting to respect the flexible clay icon's birthday: Gumby turns 50 this year. It all began when Art Clokey made a short film called "Gumbasia," featuring clay animation set to jazz. It inspired the long-lived TV show (223 episodes, darn it) about the lovably clueless simpleton. To celebrate and help launch a full-on Gumby comeback (shoot me before this happens), the historic Lynn House Gallery in Antioch, Calif., about 45 miles northeast of San Francisco, is hosting an art show of works devoted to the creature. And next month, the Museum of the Moving Image in the Big Apple will host its own Gumby exhibit. Before long Gumby will be riding Pokey into the White House.
Les Paul inducted into Inventors Hall of Fame
AKRON -- Les Paul, who invented the solid body electric guitar in 1946, thus helping give birth to that extraordinary, invaluable cultural Leviathan, rock-and-roll, is one of 14 people inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame this year. The 89-year-old Wisconsin native has won five Grammys. Other '05 inductees include Alec Jeffreys, who invented genetic fingerprinting, and Robert Gundlach, who made office life a true hell by inventing the modern photocopier.
Pitt expresses happinessabout time with Aniston
NEW YORK -- Brad Pitt says he's still proud of his relationship with Jennifer Aniston, four months after their separation. In an interview in GQ magazine, on newsstands Friday, Pitt expresses nostalgia and happiness for his 4 1/2 years of marriage with Aniston, who filed for divorce in March. "There's a beauty in our coming together, there's a beauty in our time together, and there's a beauty in this, for us," Pitt says. "I'm actually really proud of us. ... We've done it our way, and I love her for that. We've kept the love we have for each other." On reports that he wanted children, but Aniston didn't, Pitt says: "That was one version," but totally unfounded. As to reports of a romance with his "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" co-star Angelina Jolie, Pitt didn't explicitly deny them, but said he pays it no mind. "Jen and I have felt pretty impervious to it all. We have not seen a thing, so that we can carry on this new incarnation with the love we still have for each other. My attitude was, say what you want, we're not playing." Instead, Pitt describes the reasons for their breakup as "complex and multifaceted" and "not one thing." Now, the 41-year-old actor says, he has growing interest in doing things other than movies: "Truthfully, I'm interested in other things now. Like family." Though Pitt says he's not ready to remarry and start that family yet, he adds: "I'm not worried that it's not gonna happen. I'll make it happen. You go make the thing that you want."
