TRACK Cassano sets Federal League discus mark



West Branch won both titles at the Northeastern Buckeye Conference meet.
NORTH CANTON -- Fitch junior Sam Cassano set a meet record in the discus on Friday with a throw of 174 feet, 8 inches at the Federal League track and field meet at North Canton Memorial stadium.
Cassano, a state qualifier last year, broke the previous mark of 174-6, set by Rod Howell in 1996.
Fitch junior Adam Kagarise won the 200- and 400-meter dashes as the Falcons placed sixth in the eight-team event.
Boardman juniors Brandon Rader and Jeremy Morales finished 1-2 in the shot put to help the Spartans place fifth. Boardman's 4x800 relay team of Jim Hlebak, Matt Moore, Tim Weaver and Jake Lape placed first and Moore was second in the 800.
Canton GlenOak won the boys team title with 112 points and Perry was second with 88.
Girls
On the girls side, Boardman senior Jessica Moore won the 800 and helped the Spartans place second in the 4x800 relay.
Boardman senior Brooke Katzman placed second in the shot put behind Hoover senior Ashley Muffet, who set a meet and stadium record with a throw of 49-11.
The Spartans' 4x400 relay team placed second.
Boardman placed fifth in the girls standings and Fitch was seventh. Falcon junior Alexis Hall finished second in the discus.
GlenOak won the team title with 116 points and Massillon Jackson was second with 101.
Northeastern Buckeye Conference
BELOIT -- Vallie Scott won three individual events (100, 200, 400) and helped West Branch win the 4x400 relay as the Warriors cruised to the girls title.
McKenzie Wallace won the 800 and was a member of the winning 4x800 relay and Alyssa Bowman won the 100 hurdles for West Branch, which defeated Marlington 158-121.
On the boys side, Nate Diehl (1600) and Jim Boals (discus) won individual events for the Warriors, who also won the 4x100 and 4x200 relays en route to the team title.
West Branch edged Marlington 891/2 to 85.
