PREP TRACK AND FIELD Area teams spread out over 8 district sites



Fitch hosts 17 Division I teams, while nine area teams compete at Salem.
Area athletes begin their quest for state berths when they compete at eight sites this week in district track and field meets.
Division II meets at Salem and Pymatuning Valley are scheduled Wednesday and Friday.
Boardman, Canfield, Chaney, Fitch, Howland, Poland (boys), Niles, Rayen and Wilson will be among the 17 boys and girls teams at the Div. I meet at Fitch High Thursday and Saturday.
Some 2004 state performers who will be trying to advance to the regional are Fitch's Sam Cassano (171 feet, 9 inches) in the discus; Warren Harding brothers Benja'Lan and J'Abneb Provitt in the 4x200 and 4x100 relays and the 100 and 200 dashes.
Chaney's Latalia Jones will be the featured sprinter (12.0 seconds) in the 100 and (25.0) in the 200. Canfield's Stephanie Jarvis (10-6) will try to move on in the pole vault and Boardman's Jessica Moore (2:23.3) will compete in the 800.
Warren Harding's boys and Boardman's girls are the defending district champs.
Slated at Salem
East Palestine, Mooney, Newton Falls, Poland (girls), Salem, Struthers, United, Ursuline and West Branch are the area schools entered in Div. II at Salem.
Members of the Struthers 2004 state championship 4x100 relay and second place 4x200 relay -- Eric Anderson, Larry Wylie, Justin Penson and Ty Campana -- will be favored.
The Quakers' Aiman Scullion and Drew Matek, returning state qualifiers, are entered along with Salem's Dierdre Cleary and Liz Shivers in the distances. Poland's Colleen Moran will be the athlete to beat in the 1600. McKenzie Wallace, Amanda Scott and Laura Scott of West Branch are also entered.
Another Div. II meet
The Pymatuning Valley district will feature two-time state 100 and 200 champion Cachet Murray. Marcellus Bowman of Liberty, a state qualifier, will contend in the 400.
Seventeen boys and 16 girls teams are set for the Div. III meet at Lakeview.
Nick Panezich of Springfield will be the athlete to beat in the shot put (60-7) and discus (190-0). State qualifiers Levi Leigh of Mineral Ridge and Justin Carolyne of South Range will meet for the fourth time this season in the hurdles.
Jen Grayson of Maplewood is the athlete to beat in the girls high jump and both hurdles.
Div. III at Norwayne
Two of the area's best throwers, Lisbon's Dom DeFilippo and Leetonia's Aaron Merrill, will compete in Div. III district at Norwayne.
Beaver Local's outstanding senior, Dan Kinsey, will participate in the Div. II district at West Holmes.
John Martin of Wellsville will contend in the throws at the Div. III district meet in Newcomerstown.
