PREP SOFTBALL Canfield, Mooney can't finish what they started

Inclement weather stopped a game in which Canfield led.
CANFIELD -- In a way, it was both a "lucky" and an "unlucky" Friday the 13th for the Canfield High softball team.
It was lucky in the sense that Canfield was able to build a 4-1 lead, scoring all its runs in the fourth inning at McCune Park Friday night.
Unlucky, however, that the game was called shortly thereafter with Mooney batting in the fifth inning.
The game was stopped due to continuous lightning and subsequent rain showers.
"This is the second year in a row that this has happened to us when playing Cardinal Mooney," Canfield coach Fred Mayhew said. "We're pleased that we were able to fight back and take the lead, but disappointed that the game could not continue."
Canfield (19-4), winners of three straight and five of its last seven, was going for its second 20-win season in three years, while Mooney (16-6) hoped to avenge a 2-1, eight-inning defeat to Canfield earlier in the season.
"We're just disappointed that the game could not continue," Mooney coach Mark Rinehart said. "We feel confident that we could play with Canfield and the last three innings could have been really interesting."
Mooney scored first when Kaitlyn Bernat's single drove in Gina Brunetti in the second inning.
Bryanne Halfhill got things going for Canfield in the fourth with a one-out single. After stealing second, she scored on a single by Courtney Porter, who then came home on Lauren Sulick's double. Sulick and Ashley Bleggi scored on a sacrifice fly by Kerie Haurin and a single by shortstop Danielle Spencer.
W. Reserve 3, Columbiana 0
BERLIN CENTER -- McKenzie Mowery hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning that led Western Reserve over Columbiana.
Quinn McCamman had two hits for the Blue Devils (16-6), while Katie Harmon improved to 9-4 on the mound by throwing a four-hit shutout.
Cara Hardenbrook and Kaylee Crittesdes each tripled for Columbiana.
Lake 6, Fitch 0
AUSTINTOWN -- Lake scored five times in the final two innings to post a Federal League win over Fitch.
Jen Purnell struck out 13 in a losing effort for the Falcons (12-8, 6-6).
Bre Alleman and Nicole Smaldino had the only base hits for the Falcons.
Maplewood 7, Py Valley 0
ANDOVER -- The Rockets (15-3) lead the Northeast Athletic Conference with a 15-3 record.
Markie Pozzuto and Tori Spencer each hit two doubles to pace the Rockets. Brandy Fleming hit two singles and drove in four runs.
Pozzuto (1-0) scattered two hits with 13 strikeouts to pick up the win.
West Branch 13, Salem 2
SALEM -- The Warriors (10-14) scored five runs in the second inning and added six more in the seventh.
Bri Benedict hit a pair of triples as West Branch completed its season.
Samantha Yeager hit a triple for the Quakers.
Poland 2, Edison 0
RICHMOND -- Liz Maher (4-0) pitched a complete game five-hitter with four strikeouts to pick up the win.
Allie Patton doubled and scored on a single by Kari Thompson to give Poland (23-2) a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Ashley Conger made it 2-0 as she hit a home run in the fifth inning.
Patton also hit a single and Emma Breonel added a double and single.
Edison (19-8) was sparked by Annie Kovaleski and losing pitcher Lakyn Bendell each hit two singles.
