NATURE Day of activities to honor beauty, history of creek

Events include a re-enactment of a turn-of-the-century coal miner's life.
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition and the Boyers Sportman's Club are teaming up at 10 a.m. June 11 to offer a day of events celebrating the beauty and history of the Slippery Rock Creek.
The day also will look at the creek's ongoing recovery from the effects of abandoned mine drainage. All activities are free and open to the public.
There will be hands-on activities, tours and interactive demonstrations.
People can explore an abandoned mine drainage restoration project, tour a limestone quarry, go fishing, tie-dye a T-shirt, participate in conservation projects, and see what is living in and around the creek.
Fishing equipment and a limited number of T-shirts will be provided. Food will be available throughout the afternoon.
Activities will take place at the Boyers Sportsman's Club between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Afterward, there will be a chicken barbecue.
At 7:30 p.m., Richard Pawling of History Alive! will re-enact the life and times of a turn-of-the century coal miner at Jennings Environmental Education Center.
