Students understand that plants have different structures that serve different functions in growth, survival and reproduction. (Science: Life Science) Students understand that resources are things we get from the living and non-living environment to meet the wants and needs of a population. (Science: Resources) Activities:
1. Make a poster showing all the plants around your home. Write the name of each plant under your drawing.
2. Draw three large circles on a piece of paper. Now look at the names of the plants on the plant family tree in today's MiniPage. Write all the names of flowers you recognize in one of your circles. In another circle, write the names of all the plants you use for food. In the third circle, write the names of all the trees you recognize.
3. Cut out pictures or words in the newspaper that identify different plants. Paste words/pictures for decorative plants on one piece of colored paper. Paste words/pictures for food plants on another piece of colored paper. Paste words/pictures for plants used to make items we use in everyday life on another piece of colored paper. Share your papers with a family member or friend.
4. Think about the way plants play a part in your life -- not food plants, but other plants you encounter every day. Write a paragraph about the benefits you receive from plants in your home and community.
5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about a specific plant, such as corn, maple trees or walnut trees. Use these questions to guide your research: Where does this plant grow best? What kind of climate does it require? What medicinal or commercial products are made from this plant? What would people have to do if these commercial products did not exist?
